Killua Zoldyck is one ofHunter x Hunter’smost developed and beloved characters. It is unfortunate that Killua, who has screen time only second to that of Gon’s, has his personality reduced to a single dimension, that he is an assassin, lacking morals and regard for life.

The author, Yoshihiro Togashi, might have intended to make a beautiful redemption story but due to the pace of the series, Killua Zoldyk has been marked with the brand of the “cold-hearted assassin”, which may seem impressive and cool but does no justice to the depth of Killua’s character.
The killer or assassin perception largely stems from his introduction as a prodigy from a family of expert assassins (The Zoldyks) and that he was trained in assassination ever since he could barely walk. His initial portrayal showed his confidence and nonchalance, a type of disregard only ‘cold-blooded killers’ would have.

Killua’s Emotional Growth Surpasses That of Gon’s
Killua might have started as a no-nonsense assassin without emotions. However, as the story progresses, it is clear that Killua’s actions and relationships reveal a far more complex personality, showing that he is deeply emotional, self-aware, and compassionate.
Killua’s thirst for recognition from his family and his elder brother is what pushes him to grow further and act more like an assassin. Coming from a family that has never heard a child’s laughter, Killua’s journey in thevast world ofHunter x Hunteris his second chance at having a childhood.

With Gon, who is both naive and mature at the same time, Killua discovers parts of himself he never knew he had. His friendship with Gon is the spark that ignites his desire to become a person, not just a killing machine. Killua shows a childlike curiosity, depicting that he is indeed a kid who has been through difficult circumstances.
Killua’s friendship with Gon liberated him
A common misconception that could be made by viewers is that Gon “changed” Killua. In actuality, contrary to his portrayal in the series, Killua did have feelings in moments of flashbacks.
Even before Killua met Gon, we can see that he was a caring child forced into his unfeeling demeanor. His interest in befriending the canary when he was a kid showed that his humanity always existed; it was just suppressed.

Gon gave Killua the space and support to express kindness and humanity. He showed him strength can come from emotions as well. The Zoldycks tried to suppress Killua’s true nature through abuse and manipulation, like implanting a needle in his head to instill fear and obedience. Despite this, Killua retained his innate nature evident from his care for characters like Alluka, Palm, and Ikalgo.

Killua’s decision to run away from home is the first clue to his actual nature. Unlike the Zoldyks, who are assassins and cold-blooded by choice, Killua wanted something different from them. He wanted a purpose and a companion he could rely on. His journey with Gon gives him newer insights and realizations, and due to thefrequent hiatus,we will have to wait and watch,
