While Geralt of Rivia’s original adventures started with the book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, over the last decade and moreThe Witcherseries has grown into a far bigger phenomenon thanks to the award-winning game series from CD Projekt Red andan upcoming adaptation debuting on Netflix later this month. With the series just a few weeks away from airing its first season, we can now hear what the series will sound like with two new music tracks that give a taste of its soundtrack.
Over atIndieWire, two music tracks were released from the soundtrack of Netflix’sThe Witcherahead of the premiere of its first season later this month. The two tracks, titled “Geralt Of Rivia” and “Toss A Coin to Your Witcher,” are meant to give a small taste of the tone and action of the score that will drive the upcoming fantasy Netflix series.
As detailed byIndieWire, the score has been composed by Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli, who previously worked on TV series such as Amazon’sThe Romanoffsand Spike’sThe Mist. One of the most interesting aspects of the music thatIndieWiredetailed is that the “Geralt of Rivia” track seems to act as a major theme for the show, and that “every episode’s title sequence features an arrangement of the theme, and the track will vary depending on the overall tone and soundscape of each episode.”
This makes me think of howGame of Thrones’s iconic opening credits sequence showing the map of Westeros changed between episodes and seasons to reflect the changing state of the world, andThe Witchermay be trying to go for a similar effect through its score. Specifically, Belousova said that “the audience needs to want to immediately embark on adventures with Geralt,” and added that “because every opening sequence is different, musically, everything needs to vibe with the overall soundscape of each episode.”
While the upcoming series is a direct adaptation ofTheWitcherbook series by Andrzej Sapkowski, it’s not hard to listen to the music and hear some slight hints of the games by CD Projekt Red and the distinct music that set them apart. Thankfully we’ll only have to wait a little bit longer to hear the music to its full effect in the course of the show, which hasalready been renewed for a second season by Netflixahead of its premiere.
Personally, despite having only experiencedThe Witcherthrough CD Projekt Red’s games, I’m pretty excited to see how Netflix is able to bring the world ofThe Witcherto life. While the initial teaser trailer I felt was a little uneven,the more recent trailershave had me more optimistic about the show and excited to see how its fantasy world comes together, and I’m especially digging how Henry Cavill seems to be portraying everyone’s favorite Witcher.
