Benedict Cumberbatch had a pretty close call with death back in 2004. Following his commitment to BBC’sTo the Ends of the Earth, he flew to South Africa to film the show. However, things went south when he and two of his mates were left stranded after their car’s front tire blew up in a notoriously dangerous place.

What followed was complete horror for the three of them, as not only did they get robbed, but Cumberbatch feared he was going to be killed after he was trapped in a car’s trunk for 2.5 hours.

I was scared, really scared. I said: ‘What are you going to do with us? Are you going to kill us?’ I was really worried that I was going to get raped or molested or just tortured or toyed with in some way, some act of control and savagery.

The six men eventually left without any explanation after taking away their bank cards and money, and upon being rescued by a local, Cumberbatch recalled crying with gratitude.

The trauma he endured from the ordeal made the actor an adrenaline junkie, as he was“throwing myself out of planes, taking all sorts of risks”. But thanks to his children, things changed, as he expressed being comfortable with what lies beneath.

But apart from my parents, I didn’t have any real dependents at that point. Now that’s changed, and that sobers you. I’ve looked over the edge; it’s made me comfortable with what lies beneath it. And I’ve accepted that that’s the end of all our stories
