Kevin Costner almost returned for a sequel to 1992’sThe Bodyguardwith the late Princess Diana, he revealed in a recent interview. The actor, who currently works on his own franchise,Horizon: An American Saga, thought he could never replace the royal princess in his movie after she passed away.

The film also starred Whitney Houston, Gary Kemp, Bill Cobbs, and Ralph Waite, to name a few. It was helmed by Mick Jackson and was a massive commercial success despite its critical negative reviews.

During his guesting onThe Howard Stern Show, actor-directorKevin Costnerrevealed he was planning to make a follow-up movie toThe Bodyguardand he was on the verge of hiring the latePrincess Diana.
I said, ‘I’m going to do Bodyguard 2 and I think I can build this around you. Would you be interested?’ She goes, ‘Yes. My life’s about to change.’ I thought I understood what she’s saying: ‘I’d like to open my life. I think I would like to do this.’

Costner shared that he was able to talk to her for the second time when she asked if there was going to be a kissing scene and he inquired if she wanted one. Princess Diana had no qualms about it, and the actor had everything laid out.

When the princess died due to a fatal car crash, Costner could no longer push through with the movie plan.
I could not replace Princess Di. Kind of like, if I couldn’t have done Bodyguard with Whitney, I don’t think I was gonna make it with anybody.

It would have been an interesting sequel toThe Bodyguardwith Princess Diana in it. It’s not always a Hollywood movie gets to feature someone from the royal family and it’s not always that Costner gets the opportunity to share the screen with a real-life princess.
Kevin Costner Won’t Make Movies Without Strong Female Characters
In his interview with Josh Horowitz’sHappy Sad Confusedpodcast, Costner admitted he makes Western movies with men as his target audience.
I make movies for men. That’s what I do. But I won’t make a movie unless I have strong women characters, and that’s how I’ve conducted my career. I think that’s why I have a good following.

The actor ensures everyone that his movies will always portray women as strong characters, and this will become evident in hisHorizonfilms. “I thank you women for dragging your men here — it was a Western after all. I just can’t conceive of a movie without having [strong women],” he adds.
