“I HOPE YOU STEP ON A LEGO” [sic] is the title of a series of Monster Hunter mods, one that’s recently been ported toMonster Hunter Wilds. The plan is simple: take the model for the Shock Trap, and turn it into a golden version of the classic 2x2 Lego brick.

The mods’s creator,Kimchiworm, has made these mods available on Nexus Mods, freely available to any sufficiently cruel players of the PC versions ofMonster Hunter World,Rise, andnow: Wilds. It’s an effort with real legacy behind it, with the mod for World releasing 5 years ago - but sometimes, you just gotta do it, you know?

Monster Hunter Wilds modded shock trap glowing with electricity

It’s a small change, but this new context for the shock trap has a big impact. Now, instead of electricity paralyzing the monster oh so boringly, the monster twitches and writhes in agony, stunned by the accursed affliction they unwittingly wandered into. How fun!

Just think - all that effort spent on developing caltrops for military use throughout history, and they all get outshone by an especially playful Danish toy company.

And fear not: the Monster Hunter Wilds version of the mod has been tagged “fair and balanced” - the monsters can still get their revenge on you for deploying such weapons of mass construction, though there’s gonna be a bit less plastic involved on their end.

Monster Hunter Wilds Is Bringing Back Fan Favorite Sea Serpent In Free Update

Capcom has revealed that a fan-favorite leviathan is returning to Monster Hunter Wilds as part of a free update set to arrive in Summer 2025.

“The most cruel mod I’ve ever seen on nexus…thank you,” writes one user inthe commentsof the original Monster Hunter World mod. It’s a sentiment that carries on a half-decade later, with another user writing “Brilliant! I’ll download the mod as soon as I can stop laughing” on the Wilds incarnation.

Monster Hunter Rise version of the lego shock trap mod, with green brick

Though there is one point of real sorrow in this whole thing. AsPC Gamerrightly points out, this new version lacks the red, blue, and green brick color options of the Rise mod. Such sins must be rectified.

When a mod like this builds up a legacy, a ‘dedication to the bit’, you can expect to see it crop up in any future Monster Hunter titles. As long as PC players are able to mod the game, they’ll be putting Lego bricks where monsters would rather not see them.

Monster Hunter Wilds Customization

And given that Monster Hunter Wilds sold pretty well on PC, even despitethe game’s terrible optimizationat launch, PC players will likely keep that access for a long time yet.

Monster Hunter Mods - All In Good Fun, And Capcom’s Nemesis

Capcomhasn’t been especially fondof people modding their games. Hard to imagine why.

No, really, it’s a bit much. Jokes of animal cruelty aside, mods like I HOPE YOU STEP ON A LEGO aren’t exactly an existential threat to the integrety of Monster Hunter. Things obviously get more complicated in a multiplayer setting, but as long as things are limited to client-side and don’t affect gameplay, the playerbase as large will have no issues.

Such mods are absolutely possible to make - that’s how I preferred to play Palworld, back when that was big - and while that game hasfaced some problems, mods really aren’t among them.

Despite all the writhing and twitching in agony this mod causes forCapcom’s wildlife, the games themselves are certainly better off with mods like this existing. And hopefully, we’ll see more like them soon.
