Before, having your own horse or other steed in Minecraft was a privilege reserved for those lucky cave divers who happened to find a saddle in a chest in a desert temple or other ruins, but no more.
As of snapshot25w20afor the Java Edition ofthe survival sandbox game, available today, saddles can now finally be crafted.
The snapshot is part of the upcomingSummer Drop 2025, version 1.21.6, coming next month, and is also available in beta for the Bedrock Edition of the game alongsidea host of other features and changes.
Not So Rare Anymore
Saddles were once one of the rarer items you could find in Minecraft, since they would only appear in certain types of generated ruins.
Now, though, it can be crafted with a few common ingredients: three leather and a single iron ingot.
Honestly, it never made sense to me that saddles were so hard to come by to begin with, so this change has been a long time coming.
For those who have never used one, it allows you to control the various types of rideable mobs, including both fleshy and skeletal horses, camels, donkeys, and mules. Once you tame them by trying to ride them enough times, you’re able to put a saddle on them to control them freely while riding them.
I’m A Former Minecraft Kid, And I Really Enjoyed A Minecraft Movie
Say what you want about A Minecraft Movie, but as a Gen Z former Minecraft kid, this movie scratched an itch I didn’t even know I had.
Pigs are also rideable, but not without a saddle, unlike the other mobs, and can only be controlled with a carrot on a stick.
Additionally, with the new update, a saddle can now be removed using shears after it has been put on a mob—not while riding them, obviously.
There’s also a different type of saddle, called a harness, that allows players to ride the new non-hostile Happy Ghasts, just like Piglins inthe Minecraft movie.
The snapshot also adds five new music tracks, one of which is only available as a rare drop from defeating a Ghast in the Nether.
Personally, as someone who grew up with beta versions of Minecraft, I have a hard time keeping up withall these additions and updates, but this one is resolving something that’s been annoying since the start. It’ll definitely make saddles less exciting to find, though.
