Mike Flanagan is reportedly writing aClayfacemovie for DC Studios. Flanagan has been planning to venture into the superhero genre for a long time now, sharing his intention to work his ‘horror’ magic in the genre. However, Flanagan’s reported DC project confuses fans in one aspect. Is it an official DCU entry or part of the Elseworld Universe?

DC Studios is yet to comment on the film but reports suggest that Matt Reeves, who is currently headlining the Elseworld Universe, is serving as a producer on the film. However, the possibility of Clayface being a DCU project is also not far-fetched considering James Gunn’s affinity to such unique concepts.

According toVariety, Mike Flanagan is reportedlybringing his horror expertise into DC. AClayfaceproject is in the works as per reports, with Flanagan serving as the writer. Clayface has had several iterations in DC films including the recent iteration in the animated project,Creature Commandos.

Not many details are available on the new project, which makes one aspect of it confusing for fans.Clayfaceis produced byMatt Reevesand Lynn Harris through their company, 6th & Idaho Productions. Reeves is a prominent figure in DC, just not on the DCU side of things. After directing aBatmanfilm and executive producing Max’sThe Penguinseries, Reeves serves as a kind of figurehead of DC’s Elseworld.
His involvement in the project makes it likely thatClayfacewould be a part of Elseworld. That’s until you hearJames Gunn‘s vision for DCU. AfterdroppingCreature Commandosepisodeson Max, the DC co-CEO spoke to Variety about his plans for the studio. Especially, Gunn mentioned exploring a comic book character in different genres. He toldVariety:

One of the main things I want to establish is that you can do anything at DC Studios. We can make complete family fare. We can make something that’s for general audiences, like Superman. We can make something that’s violent and sexual, like this. … It’s about creating a world in which we can tell the story about, you know, one type of character in different genres.
The shapeshifting character was first introduced in 1940 as an actor in Gotham who turns to a life of crime. BeforeCreature Commandos, Clayface was featured in animated projects likeBatman: The Animated SeriesandHarley Quinnand in live-action projects likeGotham.

WhileMike Flanaganwill contribute to setting a different storytelling tone forClayface, he will not be directing the film. According to Variety’s report, Flanagan has a packed schedule with highly anticipated horror projects. Flanagan’s touch is the most needed element for the success of anotherExorcistfilm as he is set to write and direct the film for Blumhouse and Morgan Creek.
