AlthoughBorutois a sequel spin-off series of one of the biggest projects in the anime and manga industry, it has received a lot of hatred. Despite being a part of theNarutofranchise,Borutohas failed to live up to the expectations of fans like its predecessor did. The general opinion was that it failed as an anime story and thus was subjected to hate for spoiling theNarutoname.

There have been multiple reasons why Boruto is considered a flop series. Some target it for its plain storyline, while others are unhappy with the character development. But the main reason behind the hatred towardsBorutois the way it portrayed the characters from theNarutoseries. Be it Naruto or Sasuke,Borutohas failed the original characters in a major way.
And the blame for it is equally shared by Masashi Kishimoto, the creator ofNarutoandBoruto. However, the manga creator could have easily avoided all this hate if he had just given a sufficient amount of gap between the timelines ofNaruto’sstory andBoruto’sstory.

The years of hatred subjected towardsBoruto
WhenBorutowas first announced by Kishimoto in 2015,Narutofans were especially excited about it as they were going to get a deeper look into the future of their favorite characters. It was assumed that the story would focus on the life ofNaruto’scharacters with the addition of the next generation of Shinobis, who would represent the change in timeline.

However, just after a few chapters, fans realized thatBorutowas not like anything they expected. It delivered an entirely new storyline with the central focus being the new generation dealing with a new villain, and the original characters were just portrayed in the supporting role. Even then, their character development was not at all justified, and thusbegan the hate towardsBoruto.
Fans started criticizingBorutofor almost everything. The manga was targeted for the fillers and unnecessary plot developments, and the anime was targeted for the pacingand the animation quality. And while the series has tried to win back the fans using different methods, nothing has worked in the favor of the series.

One change could have avoided all the hatred towardBoruto
The bad portrayal of theNarutocharacters inBorutowas reflected in the fact that even though most of them were in their prime age (the same age as Kakashi), they didn’t get a chance to showcase their skills.
If the narrative had given them the chance to prove their worth, they would have only added to the hype ofBorutofrom when it was announced.

This problem could have been avoided if the series had portrayed the new generation as the grandsons of the original characters. This way the gap would have been sufficient in the timeline to give less focus on theNarutocharacters and allow theBorutocharacters to make a name for themselves by being the central attraction of the series.
Masashi Kishimoto Still Has Time to Fix Boruto by Undoing a Mistake Even Akira Toriyama Made
Masashi Kishimotowanted to makeBorutopopular by creating a mix of characters from both timelines. But with the progression of the story, he left the old characters out and thus was subjected to hatred from the fans who didn’t like their favoriteNarutocharacters being sidelined.
BorutoandNarutoare available to watch on Hulu.
