Yesterday, Bungie announced that its upcoming extraction live-service shooter Marathonwas getting delayed indefinitely, which shouldn’t surprise anyone if you’ve been keeping tabs on the game.
Apparently, even the developers at the studio were unaware of the game’s delay, and only found out about it at the same time as everyone else.

Despite Marathon’s Difficulties, Sony Vows Not To Repeat Concord’s Mistakes
During a business conference, CEO Hermen Hulst promised that Sony has learned from their mistakes with Concord.
If true, this means the dysfunction at the studio is even more severe than anyone thought.

Marathon Game Devs Only Heard About The Delay When The Announcement Happened It’s Claimed
This new tidbit of info comes from journalist Paul Tassi who mentioned it over on X (formerly Twitter), where he claimed the devs were only finding out about the delay “just now,” meaning the same time as it was officially announced.
Tassi has leaked info about Destiny and Bungie previously, so he’s a credible source of info when it comes to news about the studio. Even so, this is still second-hand info, so there is a slight chance he was fed wrong info. However, looking at the recent tribulations happening at the studio, the announcement not being shared with the entire dev team doesn’t seem like it’s out of the question.

Since the Marathon release date wasannouncedin April, things have not gone well for Bungie. Not only were people underwhelmed with the gameplay blowout shown then, but even its closed playtest was glazed over, given that another extraction shooter, ARC Raiders, kind of stole its lunch money.
Bungie Comments On Marathon Nintendo Switch 2 Version
Bungie isn’t closing its doors on a Switch 2 port of its upcoming extraction shooter.
With the disastrous launch of Concord, it was a wise move by Sony to delay Marathon’s release. Not only to enable developers to continue working on the game, but also to alleviate the negative attention surrounding it.

Will Marathon be released this year? Given it’s skipping its original September release date, and withGhost of Yoteidominating Sony’s holiday 2025 release, I doubt it. Chances are, this will be released early 2026 or even much later, so asnot to cross paths with the game everyone is avoiding.
