In an interview, Mackenyu is seen mentioning how he was approached for the role of Zoro, but he initially rejected it. The actor revealed that he didn’t know that the call for the audition that he got was for the role of Zoro in the biggestOne Pieceproduction ever.

Mackenyu Initially Turned Down Zoro’s Role
In an old interview clip shared by@philazoraon X, Mackenyu was asked about how he got such a big role inOne Piecelive-action. TheOne Pieceactor made the startling revelation that although he got the role through an audition, he initially didn’t know what the audition was about.

At the time, Mackenyuwas shooting forKnights of the Zodiacin Budapest, which was also a big film for him as he was the main lead. Thus, he wanted to focus on his current project, and he rejected the audition. Plus, he didn’t know much about the audition, as the creators wanted to keep the production ofOne Piecelive-action a secret.
However,Mackenyumentioned that, as there were not many Japanese actors who could speak English, they approached him once again. This time Mackenyu asked them about the role and the project that they wanted him to audition for. As soon as he heard the namesOne Pieceand Zoro, he agreed to the role without even giving it a second thought.

He revealed that Oda was handling the casting for the series, andhe supervised almost everythingfor the series.
