TheOne Piecelive-action has nailed many things about the original manga and anime but the one undeniable thing is how much the actors are like their characters. Most of them match the exact vibe or their incredible talent allows them to bring them to life. One Piecehas some eccentric people so it must’ve been hard to choose but no one would ever regret Mackenyu as the beloved swordsman, Roronoa Zoro. The handsome man is trained in Kyokushin Karate and his occasional goofiness makes him the perfect Zoro.

What makes him even more matched for Zoro is that the actor will be spending his birthday on the set ofOne Piece. His Instagram story suggests his swords won’t leave his side, something Zoro would do. Mackenyu is clearly as hardworking as the Straw Hat Pirates’ Swordsman if he spends his downtime working and doing stunts instead of eating cake.
Mackenyu: How Oda Chose the Perfect Live-Action Zoro
According to Mackenyu, he initiallyturned down auditioning for Zorosince the actor actually had no idea what the role was. The creators andEiichiro Odaonly wanted Mackenyu and approached him themselves. Due to his history of lovingOne Piece,he only naturally accepted the role but it didn’t hurt that he’s a veteran of acting in live-actions. But Zoro was completely different.
“That made it hard”: Mackenyu’s Only Complain about Eiichiro Oda During One Piece Helped Him Perfect Zoro
Mackenyu trained daily to get accustomed to the Three Sword Style and they even made a custom mold to fit the third sword, the Wado Ichimonji, that goes in his mouth. Still, the fighting style came effortlessly to the already-trained martial artist. Zoro’s action scenes in theOne Piecelive-action are some of the most thrilling moments. He didn’t look awkward or unnatural like he was born for the role.
On top of being trained for his fighting style, Mackenyu’s comedic timing and sarcastic attitude were perfect for the direction the live-action took for Zoro’s character. The original Zoro is a lot more loud and short-tempered pre-time skip with much more comedic gags. The live-action had to tone it down by mostly giving him a cool attitude and witty remarks but Mackenyu’s subtle acting made it in tune with Zoro’s character and funny.

What’s Next for Zoro in Season 2 ofOne PieceLive-Action
The first season’s introduction of Zoro also foreshadowed the Baroque Works trying to recruit the swordsman. This will tie into the events of the second season with the Whiskey Peak Arc where Zoro will have to take on and successfully defeat 100 bounty hunters in the Baroque Works who target novice pirates. This easy defeat earned him his first bounty. We hope the live-actionwon’t water down the fight scene.
“I don’t know people cast me as Bad Boys”: Zoro in One Piece is Not the First Time Mackenyu Played a Badass Swordsman in His Career
Zoro will also gain new swords after losing 2 in his fight with Mihawk, including the infamous cursed sword, Sandai Kitetsu. Moreover, Mackenyu has significantly muscled up for the upcoming seasons. While his physique is a lot more like Zoro’s in the post-time skip era, it doesn’t hurt for him to already start his journey and maintain it.
The live-actionOne Pieceis available on Netflix.
