Ever since Joe Manganiello joined the cast of Netflix’sOne Piece,it’s been a surprise how much research the actor has done on the characters. He is set to play Sir Crocodile, one of the Seven Warlords and Luffy’s first big antagonist. Manganiello has clearly done his reading after expressing his own thoughts on a darker path Luffy could’ve stumbled upon. The actor knew more about Crocodile’s past than mostOne Piecefans know today.

Sir Crocodile from One Piece.

Manganiello referenced Crocodile’s utter defeat against Whitebeard and how the character dealt with it is essentially the other side of the same coin of what Luffy went through. Luffy has been through several defeats on his path so far and while he almost succumbed to despair, he persevered. Crocodile, on the other hand, went on a darker path during his life on the seas after facing failure. It’s an interesting take that Manganiello has on Luffy and Crocodile’s connection.

Crocodile’s Turbulent Start and Revenge Against Whitebeard

Crocodile was truly a one-man-for-himself kind of person. The warlord pretty much attacked everyone powerful during the Summit War of Marineford, including Emperor Whitebeard. It was heavily hinted during this time that Crocodile has a past with the Emperor since he became completely bloodthirsty during the escape from Impel Down. This was confirmed as one of his first actions during his life of piracy was to take down Whitebeard in the New World, only to face utter defeat. The warlord has since then been hungry for power and only trusts himself. He went on a dark path and took over the Alabasta Kingdom to find the Ancient Weapon, Pluton.

Alabasta Arc was the first time Luffy faced such a formidable foe. He had to fight the warlord at least thrice before he defeated him. Still, Sir Crocodile is not all evil. While his reasons were self-serving and mostly due to his hatred for the Marines, he did save Portgas D. Ace and buy him more time. He saved Luffy multiple times during Marineford after the tragic death of his brother. He became a fan-favorite after these events as a character who isn’t purely bad or good, just a character with different intentions.

The Connection Between Luffy and Crocodile

Luffy and Crocodile might have started as enemies but they became reluctant allies during the Impel Down and Marineford Arcs. While it might’ve been Crocodile’s only option for escaping at the time, the warlord didn’t have to save the boy multiple times in Marineford. Joe Manganiello might be onto something with the connection between them. They are two sides of the same coin and maybe the future Luffy could’ve taken if he allowed the defeats to get to him.The actor suggests:

He represents this dark potential future for Luffy. If he’s affected or allows the trauma of defeat to infect him the way it was for me, and I think that there’s a part of Crocodile that wants everyone to suffer the way he did after Whitebeard, or with the disappointment of not becoming the King of the Pirates and letting that go. And of course, not trusting your friends.

One Piece Live-Action Still Needs to Address a Major Criticism That Will Surely Affect Joe Manganiello’s Sir Crocodile in Season 2

Considering most of the live-action cast is chosen byEiichiro Oda, Joe Manganiello will certainly do justice to Crocodile’s character. The actor has shown critical thinking in line withOne Piece’sportrayal of the villains. We just have to wait and see now with Season 2.
