There were a lot of iconic Cersei Lannister moments inGame of Throneson varying degrees, but nothing beats Lena Headey’s single most epic scene in the finale episode of Season 6. After all the troubles and sacrifices, and with all of her children dead, she finally sat on the Iron Throne.

It’s a goosebumps-worthy scene seeing the crown placed on her head as she sat on the coveted throne. Her path towards becoming the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms was rough and a long time coming, and even Headey could not believe her character would end up ruling Westeros.

Lena Headey didn’t expect Cersei Lannister to sit on the Iron Throne

Cersei Lannister had a tumultuous experience following her trial by the Faith of the Seven and the infamous walk of shame inGame of Thrones. Then, with the destruction of the Great Sept of Baelor and the death of her last child, Tommen, the queen regent had no more left in her than thebitter act of revenge.

Taking the Iron Throne by herself was indeed the biggest retaliation she could do after everything she suffered.Lena Headeyreflected on Cersei finally claiming her seat in an interview withTimemagazine:

I couldn’t believe that moment. I never saw that coming in a million years, I never thought she’d have the balls to finally go, “All right then, I guess I’ll f—ing do it.”

The actress thought that scene was a great moment for her character, and she knows that possessing the seat of power will always give her some sense of reflection that after all the pain she inflicted on people, the seat will never be as comfortable as she hoped it would feel.

Not many people predicted Cersei’s ascension, although we’ve always been aware of her hunger for power and control. Also, the fact that she’s been a leading figure in Westeros for years after becoming the queen consort, dowager, and regent makes her claim to the throne less shocking than expected.

Lena Headey knew Cersei Lannister wouldn’t reign for very long

For years, everyone had been asking the one question of who ends up on the Iron Throne, and when Headey found out Cersei was going to do it, she was so confused she had to read the script nine times.

Surprisingly, her reign was cut short and the actress somehow predicted this in her interview withEntertainment Weekly. “I’m left to wonder who’s going to take her down. She may only be there for a second,” she remarked. Cersei’s brief rule was a great irony to her character’s arc, whose selfishness and narcissism cost a lot of lives, particularly her children’s.

It only shows that no one gets to sit on the Iron Throne for a long time, and no one leaves it alive—even Headey was aware of this possibility for her character. “I’ve always said that when it happens, as long as it’s kinda glorious and gory and it’s by the right person,” the actress noted.

Game of Thronesis currently available to watch on HBO.
