Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jennifer Lopez’s relationship was controversial, to say the least. Of course, the industry mogul’s relationship with Kim Porter didn’t help either. J-Lo and Diddy’s relationship was brief, starting in 1999 and ending just two years later in 2001. Now, it looks like Diddy was just trying to get back at his ex and the mother of his children through Jennifer Lopez.
Diddy immediately fell in love with Kim Porter’s calm and composed nature. However, this is the same thing that irked him to no end as their relationship progressed. A man so used to people hyping him up where he went suddenly started feeling that Kim Porter’s nonchalant and cool behavior towards him was just unacceptable. Thus, he decided to find someone who’d love him how he wanted to be loved.

Diddymight not have experienced love at first sight when he saw Kim Porter but he sure as hell came pretty close to it. Talking toEssenceabout the first time he saw her, he revealed that she was at the studio with singer Al B. Sure, her ex.

That’s when he began noticing Porter and wishing he got a girl like that for himself. He recalled,
I wasn’t trying to holler at her or anything, but I was admiring her—her lips, her eyes, her mouth, her shape, her energy—and thinking, ‘I wish I had a girl like that.’
He went on and on about her cool nature, something he once found extremely attractive in the woman. He stated,
She was smooth, you know, like ice. She’s cool and collected and thinks before she speaks. You meet a lot of young ladies, and they just don’t do that. Kim was never pressed; she was always in control.
Over time though, it was exactly this that started ticking Diddy off. Suddenly, their perfect heaven was in shambles and it all began when the rumors of Diddy andJennifer Lopez’s affair sprung up. Eventually, she ended up kicking Diddy out of their home.
Kim Porter Knew What Diddy Was Doing
Explaining his side of the story, Diddy stated that everything that happened with Lopez didn’t just happen out of the blue. He admitted that he“wasn’t trying to hurt”Porter but was simply looking for a partner who would be a bit more…“aggressive”and not laid back like Porter.
I’m used to applause when I walk in the room and she was just too cool. I would tell her, `I guess I’ll go be with someone else who’ll take care of me the way I want to be taken care of, who’ll be a little more aggressive.’
Funny how the things that made him fall for Porter, made him fall out of love, too. You know what they say, the grass is always greener on the other side.

Diddy had hoped that his little stunt with Porter would have her running back into his arms in no time. He stated,“I thought, ‘I’ll test the waters and hopefully Kim will see I’m serious and come running after me.”Only things didn’t quite go according to his plan.
Instead of turning into a mess and having a breakdown, Porter took charge of her life and focused her energy on her kids. While Lopez and Diddy dated, Porter knew that the relationship was one for the camera.
That relationship wasn’t real. The world just saw the bright lights and the camera. But I knew what was really going on. He was still in love with me.
She recalled how Diddy would blow her phone up every day. Porter knew that when things would die down with Lopez, Diddy would come back to her. And he did. Eventually, Porter and Diddy sorted out their differences and got back together in 2003. They split up again, this time for good, in 2007. Porter passed away on June 12, 2025.
