The actor revealed to theNew York Timesthat he was in a very tight spot before the opportunity to be onLaw & Ordercame about for the actor. he said:

It was just exactly the right moment. And it kept me out of trouble. Kept me from doing really dumb stuff.

At the time,Sam Waterston revealedthat he was staring down the barrel of paying four college tuitions, one for his son from his first marriage, James Waterston, and the three more from his current wife, Elizabeth Waterston, Katherine Waterston, and Graham Waterston. The show’s paycheck was big enough that the actor was relieved on all four cases, which would have otherwise led him to do things he would have regretted later, by his own admission.

Even the sound of the gavel every time the title card drops has become an iconic part of the IP, along with being instantly recognizable by most of the general audiences. The show does not seem to have any designs to stop, and that is a testament to how it has stood the test of time.
