It won’t be long now and Naughty Dog’sThe Last of Us 2will be launching exclusively for PS4 after facing various delays in its launch. But back in March we learned that a planned movie adaption was cancelled, and instead replaced with an HBO TV show.

The show seems to have found its first director for the first episode of the series. Johan Renck, inan interview with Discussing Film, confirmed that he was on board to executive produce and direct “at least” the pilot episode for the show. “I’m an executive producer on it and attached to it,” he says, " I will be directing at least the pilot. Then we’ll see how it goes on further."

Renck is a Swedish director who has numerous TV shows he’s directed under his belt.Chernobyl (2019)saw him directing all five episodes of the mini-series and won an Emmy for Best Directing for a Limited Series. His other works have found him directing 3 episodes ofVikings,3 episodes ofBreaking Bad, 1 episode ofThe Walking Dead,6 episodes ofThe Last Panthers, and more.

The Last of UsHBO series is being written and producedby Craig Mazin and Naughty Dog’s own Neil Druckmann. Gustavo Santaolalla will also becomposing the music for the series, The story looks to cover the events of the first game which launched in 2013. The general plot behind the first game was Joel and Ellie find one another in the midst of a post-apocalyptic America ruined by a pandemic. The two travel across the country to find a cure but are faced with numerous threats.

Back in March, it was revealed thatThe Last of UsHBO series would start productionafter the video game sequel had launched, which is on June 19, 2025. Whenever production does start and the series is ready for release, you’re able to expect it to be available on HBO. In addition, it was revealed thatHBO Max would be launching on both PS4 and Xbox One.
