Actor Jared Padalecki is best known for essaying the role of Sam Winchester in the paranormal drama seriesSupernatural. The series was created by Eric Kripke who also served as the showrunner for the first five seasons. However, the series ended up lasting fifteen seasons, well beyond Kripke’s initial pitch and planned multi-season story arc.

While many fans and network executives may have been surprised by the show’s legs, Padalecki and his co-star Jensen Ackles were sure that it was a formula set up to emulateThe X-Filesand last multiple seasons. Here is what Padalecki had to say about how long the series would last taken from an interview earlier in the run ofSupernatural.
Jared Padalecki revealed the real reason he thoughtSupernaturalwould run for a long time
Jared Padaleckirose to fame with hisrole as Sam Winchesterin the paranormal drama seriesSupernatural, which premiered in 2005. Before the show’s premiere, Padalecki and co-star Jensen Ackles appeared in an interview withEntertainment Tonight.
During the interview, Padalecki and Ackles were asked how long they envisioned the series could run with his basic premise of two brothers solving paranormal crimes across the American landscape providing plenty of potential for a ten-season run.

Sure, look at The X-Files. Yeah, I think it does. Especially with [creator and executive producer] Eric Kripke and sort of his vast array of knowledge of folklore and mythology and everything.
Padalecki made the above statement, referencing one of the most popular shows of all time, which ran for nine seasons in its original run before being revived.

As a result, the actor’s comments confirmed that series creatorEric Kripkehad envisioned the series to last multiple seasons. Furthermore, Ackles shared his co-star’s sentiments, suggesting that the series could run for ten years given the strong premise. However, back in 2005, neither of the two stars could’ve predicted thatSupernaturalwould run for fifteen seasons.
Jared Padalecki’sSupernaturalandThe X-Filescomparison makes complete sense
While Padalecki’scomparison of SupernaturalandThe X-Filesmight seem superficial, given that both shows have similar target audiences, the latter proved to be a very reliable blueprint for the Kripke-created series, as its initial idea was based on the Fox sci-fi drama.
During an interview withThe Age, Kripke revealed his original pitch for the series, which would’ve focused on two reporters traveling across America, investigating paranormal events and searching for the truth. As a result, Kripke’s original pitch which was rejected drew heavily fromThe X-Files.

Not Dean, There’s Another Role Jensen Ackles Played in Supernatural He Openly Confessed Was a “Daunting challenge”
While the version that ultimately landed on television was drastically different from the popular sci-fi series, it is hard to say that it would’ve succeeded without its predecessor. However,Supernaturalgrew beyond its initial premiseand even stopped to poke fun at itself from time to time. As a result, the series soldered on for fifteen seasons, surprising the series it was heavily inspired by.
