For a long time, fans have wanted something fulfilling from James Gunn regarding a live-action Green Lantern. Although Ryan Reynolds’ 2011 film was an attempt at the same, it famously disappointed audiences in more ways than one. Afterward, the character tried to make an appearance in DC’sArrowverse, but it was to no avail.

With this in mind, fans expected that if the franchise gave this character another go, they would do it right, doing justice to his roots and the reason why he is so loved. However, if recent news is to be believed, James Gunn may have just made a bigger mistake with this character than any of the past attempts.

A New Lanterns Show?

As DC is making its way into a new chapter for its franchise, it was inevitable that the Green Lantern would make his way into the story in one way or another. He is an important member of the Justice League, regardless of who adorns the ring, and is a fan favorite for a reason. However, recent reports have suggested that the character could be coming into the franchise in a way no one expected.

Sources have claimed toThe Hollywood Reporterthat DC is readying a new series focused on the character. Being calledLanterns, it is set to starFriday Night Lights’Kyle Chandler in the role of Hal Jordan. It has also been reported the series is taking quite a deviation from the original characteristics of the beloved superhero.

It was reported by the publication that the series will feature both Jordan and a younger version of John Stewart, with the former reluctantly mentoring the latter. It was also said that the show will have a tone similar toTrue Detective, following an Earth-bound murder that will have “larger implications”.

Although there is no denying that fans will be glad to have a series following the characters, the route that they are taking may be questionable in their eyes.

James Gunn’sLanterns—A Waste of Potential?

One of the most notable and beloved parts of any version of Green Lantern is the fact that they are intergalactic cops. They float through the universe, and the power they possess very rarely falls short. Being forces of nature and being some of the most powerful characters in the entire DC Comics, it is safe to say that the direction thatJames Gunn’sseries is rumored to be taking is quite odd.

Rather than using the freedom that a television series gives to showcase more adventures and be true to the character, the show is said to have a ‘gritty’ approach, being bound by the confines of Earth rather than taking the audience on an adventure through space. While having a murder-mystery approach is not a bad idea, the fact that it is rumored to be done on a planet level rather than a universal one would disappoint more than a few fans.

There is no denying that both Hal Jordan and John Stewart are multifaceted characters. However, considering how criminally neglected they have been in the past, going for such an approach immediately would only add to the characters’ poor live-action track record.
