Running for 11 long seasons,Modern Familyis the show many of us grew up to. From wishing we’d all have a fun dad like Phil Dunphy, a cool mom like Gloria, or even a partner-in-crime like Luke and Manny, the characters were an eclectic mix of personalities that showcased a different vibe.
However, from how the show started to how it ended, a lot of characters took an unexpected turn and the viewers didn’t really love those versions of the characters. One example that comes to mind is Manny. Let’s take a look at how his character changed over the years.
Manny’s character changed in the later seasons ofModern Family
In the pilot episode ofModern Family, we were introduced to a doe-eyed, chubby-faced Manny who believes in love and sharing that expression of love with everyone. Viewers are immediately taken by his character’s confidence, his desire to live life to the fullest, and to be adorable in every possible situation.

However, as puberty hit Manny and as he grew older,his demeanor changeddrastically. He became less confident and his self-esteem wavered as well. More than anything, he acted like a sheltered and pampered kid who wanted everything at arm’s reach and sulked if things did not go his way.
Take his breakup with Sherry, for instance, the way he reacted to being rejected told the viewers a lot about his character. Manny sulked around for days, ruining his birthday and even Lily’s. Later, when Luke made a move on Sherry since he liked her, Manny didn’t react well to that news either.
Manny’s appearance on screen became insufferable as fans started hating the way his character trajectory was portrayed. Even Gloria thought his work was devoid of any real substance which is why she agrees to send him off to a cruise with his father.
Redditor justifies Manny’s change in character
The nuances of a show or a character are often top chatter on platforms like Reddit where people never tire of giving their take as a viewer.
Unsurprisingly, Manny’s character is often in talks on the platform where one Redditor explained what could have caused the creators to make Manny change as he grew up and how it makes perfect sense for him to take that direction.
To this extent, they even claim that Manny gotinteresting and more realisticin the later seasons whereas many fans have often claimed the opposite. Manny’s insufferable nature became a point of contention in the fandom.

However, the user rightly points out that an arts and theatre major is bound to act like everything they think of is a work of genius, hinting at a manifestation of his earlier confidence. Yes, he should have worked on more real topics and issues at hand but that does not make his other work any less relevant.
The one-man play he did on technology and wi-fi is extremely relevant and his character pulled that off well. His demeanor made sense when we saw all the tiny pieces of the puzzle come together.
