Going fromLady Birdto theDunefranchise, his presence on the scene was impactful in both projects. Now, Chalamet is taking a new step in his professional life, starring in a film about Bob Dylan titledA Complete Unknown.

Looking at this, one cannot help but notice the similarities between the actor and the music legend, specifically when Chalamet is so evidently pointing them out.

Timothée Chalamet and Bob Dylan Were Rejected From Their Dreams

Recently,Timothée Chalametgave an interview withApple Musicwhere he went into great detail about his upcoming film,A Complete Unknown. There was a specific section in the interview where the actor talked about his career in comparison toBob Dylan’scareer, talking about ways that he saw pieces of himself in the legend’s life.

The actor started by clarifying that he was not trying to speak too highly of himself when he was making these comparisons, but having played the singer for a lengthy film, it is common for the two to bleed into each other. Chalamet then explained that when he was younger, he always wanted to be a part of big productions, wanting to be a big movie star.

I can relate to some of these things he went through. So Bob wanted to be a rock and roll star, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Elvis Presley—that was the sort of, depending on your point of view, the sort of rice Krispy pop rock and roll music that was saturated and marketed to kids in the late 50s.

However, when he started auditioning for these projects, he was constantly told that he was not the right person for the role, specifically being criticized for his body type. Similarly, Chalamet pointed out that Dylan wanted to make rock and roll music when he joined the industry, but when he tried to add his own individuality to it, it was rejected.

Equally, I wanted to be a big movie star actor. But if I auditioned for The Maze Runner or Divergent, things of that variety that were popping when I was coming up, it was like the feedback was always, “You don’t have the right body.” Or, I had an agent that called me and said you got to, like, put on weight.

As much as they wanted their dream, they were told that their vision, their art, and even who they were did not fit. Being constantly told that what they wanted their entire lives was something that did not want them or did not suit them was something that Dylan and Chalamet seemed to have in common.

Timothée Chalamet and Bob Dylan Broke the Norm

Having not gotten what they wanted to do with their lives, both Bob Dylan and Timothée Chalamet were forced to look elsewhere to get to where they wanted to. Chalamet started making indie masterpieces, focusing on smaller-budget films that prioritize characters instead of physical characters or flashy productions.

And then I found my way into these like very personalized movies or something; for him, it was folk music; you know, he couldn’t keep a rock and roll band cause they would all get hired by other kids that had more money literally in Minnesota. So for me, it was finding a very personal style movie like Call Me By Your Name or Beautiful Boy, or Lady Bird, Little Women, Miss Stevens, Hot Summer Nights; those were like, smaller budget but very, I don’t know how else to put it but personable movies.

Similarly, Dylan became a legend in the folk music genre, making a name for himself and making it big. Chalamet specifically focused on his perspective in this tale, stating that he made several critically acclaimed films within the span of nine months that brought him to the success that he needed to get what he actually wanted.

It was driving me crazy. Call Me By Your Name, Lady Bird, Hostiles, and Beautiful Boy, I shot in a nine-month stretch or something, and that’s before I did any sort of like press or anything related to it. So the window was pure. The way Bob made Bob Dylan LP, or Free Wheeling, that’s how I look at it. You know where his success was kind of going [slowly].

However, this opened a new problem for both artists, as they were now stuck in the confines of their new genres. Dylan found it difficult to be taken seriously in rock and roll, and people scratched their heads when it was announced that Chalamet would be a part of theDunefranchise.

I can equally relate [to him] that I was like, “I’ve done this thing, but when Denis Villeneuve knocks on the door about Dune or got the opportunity to play Willy Wonka or something, that was Bob wanting to be in a rock and roll band. Well, Leonardo DiCaprio, and that’s who is initially aspired to be. When that door wasn’t open, then I had to go make folk music basically.

However, this did not deter them, as both the stars kept doing what they wanted to, even if the public’s image of them was affected. Thankfully, they were both able to break the shackles that were put on them, which helped them get to the level of success they have today.

A Complete Unknownwill release in theaters on December 25th, 2024.
