In an interview withLittle White Lies, Lyne shared that he wanted to portray him in contrast to his popular“outgoing and ebullient”persona, which the actor found significantly challenging.
I wanted to make him more vulnerable than I’d seen him in the past. I’ve always seen him as kind of outgoing and ebullient, and what I wanted to make him was almost childlike, somebody rather quiet.

“At times, Ben would say, ‘It’s not in my DNA to be like this,'”he recalled. And while the actor was unsure, the filmmaker was adamant that he could do it.“But I think it was. I was proud of that,”he said, noting the duality of his character’s strength and fragility.

Armas portrayed the role of Melinda, a married woman and a mother, who continues to engage in extramarital affairs. And the filmmaker later revealed that Armas was deeply concerned about howaudiences would respond to her character.

Adrian Lyne reflected on her concerns in an interview withCinemablend, saying,“Well, she would say quite often during the shooting, she would say, ‘They’re gonna hate me! They’re gonna hate me!'”
“I mean, she’s got a kid, she’s f**king around, but that’s the character,”he acknowledged before noting,“It didn’t hurt Glenn Close [after Fatal Attraction].”
