It was revealed by one of the creators of the series that there is one way that the series could make a comeback.

Sherlock Creators Hint On A Possible Season 5
A fact that is undeniable is thatSherlockwas a beautifully done series. It had a famously impeccable cast, with actors likeBenedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Andrew Scott, and Mark Gatiss. On top of this, it was exceptionally directed and beautifully written, having a conclusion that left fans in utter disbelief. With the kind of impression the series left on its fans, it is only natural that they want more.

However, it would seem that the fans aren’t the only ones, as the creators as well as the producers of the series want to come back for a fifth season very passionately. During an interview withRadio Times Covers Party, viaDevdiscourse,it was revealed by one of the creators, Steven Moffat, that everyone is willing to come back and doSherlockonce again. He went on, to state that Mark Gatiss, who played Mycroft Holmes, and Sue Vertue, a producer on the series, are on board for another season or a new story. There was, however, only one factor that was not allowing them to do so.

SherlockCreators Beg Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman To Come Back
Steven Moffat talked about howSherlockcould go into production, extremely quickly, if Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman agreed to come back as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. He mentioned that this is the only thing that is stopping the series from getting another season or a completely new arc.
“They’re on to bigger and better things but, Martin and Benedict, please come back?”said Steven Moffat.

During an interview withBBC,viaDevdiscourse,he explained that he understands that both of these actors have moved on to bigger, better things. Both Freeman and Cumberbatch are a part of the MCU and have gained immense respect outside of this series. However, Moffat tried to persuade them to make this show a part of their lives again, if not for their own sake, then for the fans, who would give anything for more Sherlock Holmes. If these two stars were to agree to come back, the likelihood of a fifth season would increase tenfold.
