In an interview, Day-Lewis spoke about getting into character to play Abraham Lincoln. At the same time, the revered actor admitted that he posed an impossible condition to Spielberg before accepting the part. However, the filmmaker agreed to the condition, leading to one of Day-Lewis’ career-best performances, and here is what the condition was.

During a press conference, Day-Lewistalked about accepting the part of Lincoln. The actor explained that before saying yes, he asked Spielberg to give him almost a year to prepare for the role, a nearly impossible condition for any director to accept.

It’s a disturbing privilege. And for that very reason, I was extremely shy about taking on this wonderful task.

Day-Lewis made the above statement (viaThe Hollywood Reporter), expressing his discomfort over asking Spielberg for such a long duration before accepting the part.

The veteran actor further explained that he wasn’t a fan of history being tampered with. As a result, he wanted to ensure that he was well prepared for the role, taking the time to put himself into the shoes of the former President. Hence, it makes sense that Day-Lewis took a year to prepare.

In the same press conference, Day-Lewis spoke aboutgetting into the characterof a real-life figure. The actor revealed that to prepare for the part, he searched for clues, finding the voice of his character to craft a convincing onscreen recreation of the President’s persona.

There are some early recordings, but no contemporary recordings — lucky for me, so no one can say positively that it’s not what he sounded like.
