If you’ve ever had a moment where you just can’t stop laughing in the middle of something serious, you’ll get why Michelle Randolph found herself in a bit of a pickle on the set ofLandman. Imagine delivering a line so awkward, so blunt, that you can barely hold it together—especially when you have to say it while looking straight into Billy Bob Thornton’s eyes. Not easy, right? But that’s exactly what happened with Randolph.

The scene that has everyone talking? Well, it’s a little… uncomfortable, to say the least. Randolph, playing the role of Ainsley, the daughter of Thornton’s Tommy Norris, has a very candid conversation with her on-screen father about her relationship with her new boyfriend, Dakota.
Michelle Randolph on delivering the most awkward line in Taylor Sheridan’sLandman
It’s hard enough to pull off a serious scene without uncontrollable giggles, let alone delivering a line so awkward that it practically begs for a reaction.
“How the mighty have fallen”: ‘Landman’ Is Proof That Taylor Sheridan’s Resorting to Cheapest Tricks After Losing Kevin Costner Due to Alleged Overambition
The scene is simple enough: Michelle Randolph’s character, Ainsley, is having a brutally honest conversation with her father, played byBilly Bob Thornton. He asks her if she’s being careful with her new boyfriend, Dakota. Ainsley’s response? Well, let’s just say it wasn’t exactly what you’d expect from a casual family chat.
In a recent talk withThe Wrap, Randolph admitted she was fully aware of the weight her words would carry. “How could you not?” she said when asked if she noticed the viral clip. The actress added:

I knew. You knew. I just thought to myself, ‘How am I going to say this with a straight face, looking into Billy’s eyes?’
And who could blame her? Delivering a line that raw while staring into Thornton’s eyes is not for the faint of heart. It didn’t help that the scene was filmed in front of an actual football game audience, adding a whole new level of discomfort. Randolph explained, revealing her thoughts during the filming:

There were people watching, and I’m like, they don’t know anything about the show. They don’t know the scripts. They don’t know the premise. If they overhear this one line, what are they going to think we’re filming?
But instead of backing down, she leaned into the awkwardness.
Michelle Randolph reflects on embracing Ainsley’s boldness
Michelle Randolph just tapped into her character’s headspace to push through the discomfort. At that moment, she was just Ainsley, an unfiltered, confident character who would say the unspeakable. “Sometimes the only way out is through,” she said (per The Wrap), acknowledging the difficulty. Continuing, Randolph said:
I was Ainsley in that moment. I was not Michelle. And as Michelle, I will never be saying that to my father. Let’s be clear.

Even though the line was tough to deliver, Randolph was drawn to Ainsley’s character for one major reason: she’s nothing like her. She confessed:
I was excited to play someone who’s also so different than myself.

Ainsley’s unbridled confidence and free-spirited nature were a challenge for Randolph to portray, but it also pushed her to tap into a side of herself she didn’t often explore.
I wish I was more unfiltered as a person.
Despite the difficulties, Randolph thrived under the direction ofTaylor Sheridan, and the two connected quickly. She said:
I just love working with him. He knows exactly what he wants, and you have such a peace of mind on set with him.
And let’s not forget that this wasn’t Randolph’s first high-profile gig. Fresh off working with legends likeHelen MirrenandHarrison Fordin1923, she was ready to face the challenge of acting alongside Thornton. “If Billy Bob’s next, I think I’m just going to pass out before work every day anyways”,she joked.
