When you think of Wentworth Miller, you picture those piercing blue eyes and the brilliant, calculated character—Michael Scofield, a highly intelligent structural engineer who deliberately gets himself incarcerated in a maximum-security prison to help his wrongfully convicted brother escape the death penalty. Miller became the hero of millions for his role inPrison Break, the one you couldn’t help but root for.

But behind those captivating blue eyes, he was keeping a secret.
Despite the accolades and legions of fans, the actor, who came out as gay in 2013, had a moment of reckoning. The character he portrayed no longer resonated with him, and he knew it was time for a change.

Wentworth Miller’s heartfelt goodbye toPrison Breakand the role that defined him
It’s no surprise thatWentworth Miller’s portrayal of Michael Scofield inPrison Breakmade women (and men) swoon. His striking looks, paired with his emotional depth, made him one of the most talked-about actors of the 2000s.
Prison Breakcaptured audiences for four thrilling seasons from 2004 to 2008, with a fifth season making its way to screens in 2017. Despite Fox’s interest in reviving the show, Miller has thrown a wrench in the works, ruling out a sixth season.

In a since-deleted Instagram post (viaToday), Miller explained that he was stepping away from playing straight characters altogether. The 52-year-old actor wasn’t deterred by the online frenzy surrounding his decision, but rather, he was driven by a deeper conviction:
I just don’t want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told). So. No more Michael.

For fans who hoped for another season ofPrison Break,Miller’s decision might come as a bitter pill to swallow, but he was clear about the importance of honoring his own journey. He added:
If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons… I understand this is disappointing. I’m sorry.

He didn’t stop at just revealing his personal choice; he dug deeper into the conversation surrounding representation in the entertainment industry. While he clarified that gay actors shouldn’t be limited to playing gay characters, he emphasized that, for him, it was simply about where he is in life now.“At this point in my life/career, it’s what feels interesting, inspiring, right,” Miller shared.
Wentworth Miller’s struggle between Michael Scofield and his true self
As Wentworth Miller reflected on his time inPrison Break, he opened up about the challenges he faced both on-screen and off. While no one explicitly told him to hide his true identity for the sake of the show, he acknowledged the subtle pressures he felt from Hollywood, society, and even his family. He wrote (in the same Instagram post):
Had I already received enough messaging from Hollywood/the larger culture/the schools I went to/my family of origin such things go unspoken lest you risk punishment, losing rights/privileges? Yes.
The irony was not lost on him—he had spent years playing a character trapped in a prison, while, in reality, he was imprisoning himself.
One of the ironies of the closet is I became my own jailer. ‘Prison Break’ indeed.
Note that Miller publicly came out as gay in 2013. In a letter posted on GLAAD’s website, he expressed his deep concern about the Russian government’s stance on gay rights, stating (viaE! Online):
I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government.
He made it clear that, in good conscience, he cannot support or endorse a country that oppresses the very people he identifies with.
The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.
Last year, we learned that a reboot ofPrison Break, penned by Elgin James, was in the works for Hulu (Entertainment Weekly). According to a recent report fromDeadline, the reboot is one step closer to becoming a reality, as Hulu has officially greenlit a pilot for the project.
Thoughts on ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ Parts One to Three
While the series won’t bring back the original characters, it will remain firmly rooted in the same universe, offering a fresh take while still honoring the world fans know and love. Though fans may never see Michael Scofield escape another prison, they’ll always remember the actor who wasn’t afraid to break free from his own.
Prison Breakis streaming on Hulu.
