Hidetaka Miyazaki’s games can never be described as simple. The man puts far too much thought into making his games as intricate and rich in lore as possible. There wouldn’t be entire YouTube channels dedicated to breaking down his narratives and worlds if they were easy to understand, after all!

Hidetaka Miyazaki loves to name everything… except his games!

A great deal of the game’s history is imparted via the descriptions of items in the game. When the item description carries so much weight, the names also reflect the same intrigue. However, when it comes to naming, Miyazaki falls short of the most important one: the title of the game!

Hidetaka Miyazaki Admits to Being Terrible at Naming His Games

The admission comes in theDrained of Blood interviewwith Future Press. The interview is a great look at how Miyazaki approaches game design and was conducted before the release ofBloodborne. Given theintricacy of the game’s narrative and setting, questions regarding the creative process behind the game were inevitable, and one of those questions led to the revelation.

The interviewer remarks how a lot of the names for items, NPCs, and locations are very creative and asks how they were created. Hidetaka Miyazaki reveals it’s a part of game design he is very fond of, calling himself a “naming nerd.” He says he gets suggestions from his colleagues at FromSoftware as well as Frognation, the company handling the English versions of the games.

The single exception here is the titles of my games. I’m really terrible at that, and really, I never had a good experience with it.

At the end of the day, the decision for the name falls on Miyazaki, who describes it as “an incredibly important part of any world you want to depict.” He considers many aspects when coming up with names, such as the origin of the word, its phonetics, and even regional considerations. However, he says the only exception when it comes to naming is with his titles!

Names Carry Great Meaning for Miyazaki

Whether it’sBloodborne,Sekiro, orElden Ring, the names of items, locations, and people all add to further fleshing out an already intricate world. The names are also directly related to the character or location, offering context and history through the title alone. So, therumor of Project Beasthas gotten fans hoping for aBloodbornesequel or remake.

Many fans have also expressed their love for the names in the FromSoftware games. Weaving etymology into the lore of a fictional world in a way that the discerning player can glean story elements from the title alone is a remarkable feat of creativity.

We now have theShadow of the Erdtreeexpansion to look forward to, and we can be sure there are going to be names and item descriptions offering even greater details ofElden Ring’s world. Gaming was one of my earliest passions then along came writing, and here we are. I’ve been in the content creation space for several years now and as gamer for even longer. From understanding the complexities of a multilayer narrative to the simply joy of “big gun go boom”, my goal is to capture all the emotions in between and put them down in an engaging manner.
