Joaquin Phoenix may be one of the most star-studded actors in Hollywood’s entertainment industry, but he has been gaining quite a bit of negative attention as of late. This follows his latest actions of leaving one of Todd Haynes’ upcoming projects that he was long attached to, just mere days after everything was prepared and before the production was about to start.

Lately, no sound reasoning has been revealed as to why Phoenix decided to take this course of action due to the abrupt way he left the project. If that wasn’t enough, the actor was confronted about the same during a recent event forJoker: Folie à Deux, but his response pretty much said indirectly that he didn’t want to discuss the real reason, further making matters worse.

Joaquin Phoenix’s Response to Why He Left Todd Haynes’ Film

A little while ago, Phoenix made headlines as he and filmmaker Haynes were reported to beattached to a project together. This piece was reportedly an untitled gay romance movie and was all set to begin filming soon in Guadalajara, Mexico. However, a mere five days before filming, theJokeractor wasreported to have dropped out of the project.

Ever since then, fans have been really interested to know what could have possibly happened becauseJoaquin Phoenix‘s exit was nothing short of abrupt and extremely unexpected. That said, during his recent appearance at the press conference for his upcomingJoker: Folie à Deuxat the Venice Film Festival, journalists couldn’t help but express their curiosity regarding the same.

“That is NOT Harvey Dent”: Fans of Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy Do Not Like Todd Phillips’ Casting of Harvey Dent in Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker Universe

However, instead of answering directly, theHeractor pretty much dodged the question. As shared by@kylebuchanan on X, Phoenix’s response was:

It would just be sharing my opinion and the other creatives aren’t here to share their piece. It doesn’t feel like that would be right. I don’t think that would be helpful so I just don’t think I will. Thank you.

But while Phoenix’s response wasn’t what fans had been wanting, it has further elevated their curiosity levels to extraordinary heights. One of the major reasons behind this may be that bothTodd Haynesand Phoenix are incredibly dedicated talents and individuals committed to the core to their projects, and just giving up on one like this doesn’t suit either of them.

Fans React to Joaquin Phoenix Dodging the Much-Asked Question

Unable to decipher why their favorite actor would leave a project so suddenly after pitching it in the first place, and then purposely dodging answering any questions regarding it directly, fans are having some of the most confused reactions on X. Whilesome of them are confronting Phoenixon his shortcomings, others are simply unable to understand this turn of events.

If anything, the actor’s decision to leave the director’s film and his subsequent dodging of questions about it has left fans confused and curious. All in all, here are some of their reactions to the same on X:

Joaquin Phoenix

He owes an explanation whether he likes it or not. He completely blew up a project that left a lot of innocent people (like the crew) in the lurch, who couldn’t afford to be. He can afford it.

“Is this Joker ever gonna scheme some sh*t?”: Joaquin Phoenix as Joker Has a Horrible Flaw That Those Who Grew up Watching Heath Ledger Can’t Ignore

Dude really saidpic.twitter.com/wF9SMD8qFp

He fucked up, confirmed.

This tells me he either had a falling out with cast and/or crew or he disliked the direction it was going thinking he’d have a bigger say, leading to the first

What kind of clarification is this

To put it in a nutshell, the perfectly brilliant way that the actor avoided answering the question only confirms one thing about this queer film from Haynes that he pitched but never got to make: The mystery behindJoaquin Phoenix’s abrupt exit from Todd Haynes’ untitled filmdoesn’t seem like one that will be unfolding to reveal the truth anytime soon.

Meanwhile, Joker: Folie à Deux will hit the screens on August 03, 2025.
