TheSolo Levelinganime adaptation has been a little bit disappointing to the “manhwa fans” in particular, but not for bad animation or rushed adaptation or anything like that. In fact, it is pretty on point in almost every aspect.

However, what seems to have become a nightmare for some fans is the all-blue getup of Sung Jinwoo instead of his iconic black outfit in the manhwa. But why is that? For the OG fans, the black suit has become synonymous with Jinwoo’s signature vibe and it seems like they don’t want any change to it.
So how much of a big deal is it actually? Does it really make the anime unbearable? In fact, some critics have even pointed out why the anime is focusing on the blue aesthetics rather than using the black one, which also sounds pretty convincing.

Fans are salty over Sung Jinwoo’s Blue colored outfit in the anime, rather than being Black
In theSolo LevelingManhwa, Jinwoo’s black suit is definitely one element that makes him look cool without a doubt; however, the anime adaptation chose the color blue for whatever reason. Some claim it is because using pitch-black clothes in an anime makes it difficult for the animators to add shaders and details to the clothes.
However, one fan went above and beyond and took it upon themselvesto investigate the possibility of using Jinwoo’s black outfit in the anime later on. They demonstrated how the color could be adapted for the character’s current design, without making it hard to animate.

‘Solo Leveling’ Used an Aizen Look-Alike to Create a Massive Misdirect and Evade the True Villain
By using a slightly darker shade of gray, the fan showed that it’s possible to maintain the details of the outfit while still using a predominantly black color scheme. This has further raised questions about why the makers of the anime would decide to go with blue instead!
The real reason why Sung Jinwoo would most likely never be wearing the black outfit in the anime
The problem with pitch-black clothing in anime isn’t the difficulty of animation but it is rather a preference in aesthetics. Without highlights and shadows, solid black would look jarring, which would be the worst-case scenario. This approach might work in a kagenashi-style anime, but that’s not the case here.
‘Solo Leveling’s’ Creative Decision to Step Away From the Manhwa Saved Cha Hae-In and Sung Jinwoo’s Relationship
So it’s not wise to be fixated on Jinwoo’s black attire only and discard anime’s choices. The blue design in the opening sequence looks pretty cool, and no one knows if black would have been that impactful. So it is perhaps time to appreciate theanime’s take on the character’s design.
Overall, the anime has been great so far, and this one design choice is nothing but a minor quibble. Don’t get all worked up over it as the awesomeness of the show far outweighs this small issue.
