When James Gunn revealed David Corenswet as Superman in the first look for the film, there was a lot of debate about the costume that the character was wearing. It seemed to draw from a slew of sources across the many iterations of the character.

James Gunn wanted to have a specific direction with the suit of Superman, which he revealed to Variety. The idea was to have something different, distinct from what had become the norm in the superhero genre, and the DCEU before his take on the franchise.
James Gunn didn’t want Superman’s suit to look like a wet T-shirt
James Gunn revealed toVarietythat a lot of work went into finalizing the suit for the DCU’s version of Superman. The idea was to have something that was a little different, a suit that did not look like a wetsuit, as had become the norm for so many superheroes across IPs. He said:
I didn’t want to have it look like a wet t-shirt. I didn’t want to have it have a bunch of fake muscles in it, and I didn’t want airbrushed abs on it.

The idea, of course, was to create an iconic suit. However, there are some who can’t help but notice that Gunn’s description matches that of Henry Cavill’s Superman suit, which was often called a wetsuit by those who were not really taken by how the character looked in the DCEU. There are those on the internet who would still prefer Henry Cavill to take over for the character, reprising his role in the DCU, but James Gunn has very clearly, wiped the slate clean, and is starting afresh…for the most part.
