George RR Martin says, “We don’t want to live the lives of quiet desperation,” and that is where the world of fantasy comes in. It saves us from stifling lives of tedious monotony and unusually dull urban existence. However, the author didn’t createA Song of Ice and Fireto help his readers escape into a land full of colors and adventures. His greatest creation was a work of absentminded accident.

George RR Martin charts an epic tale of dragons, gore, and clashing dynasties.

When the idea forA Game of Thronesfirst struck George RR Martin, it was more like a whimsical flash of genius than a decade-long research for a novel inspired by the historical Wars of the Roses. For Martin, as an amateur author with a handful of published stories, the world of Westeros and dragon queens were not included in the original blueprints ofA Song of Ice and Fire. That came to him much later.

George RR Martin Finds His Eureka Moment

A Song of Ice and Firewas conceived under Tolkien’s shadow. Inspired by the Father of Modern Fantasy and his masterpiece,The Lord of the Rings,George RR Martinset out to create a world of heroic tales, clashing dynasties, and the allure of power possessed by a single object – be it a throne or a ring – that can corrupt the bravest warriors and snuff out entire legacies. Only, Martin’s legacy would be painted in shades that were bloodier, grittier, darker, and much less heroic than the Elven imagination of JRR Tolkien.

When George RR Martin was struck by his eureka moment, it was so completely random that even the author claimed,“I didn’t know what the hell I had.”Speaking toThe Guardianin 2018 about the conception ofA Song of Ice and Firewith the first novel,A Game of Thrones, Martin revealed:

Game of Thrones: A still from Season 1 – the Starks find the direwolf pups.

[The first chapter came to me] out of nowhere. When I began, I didn’t know what the hell I had. I thought it might be a short story; it was just this chapter, where they find these direwolf pups. Then I started exploring these families and the world started coming alive. It was all there in my head, I couldn’t not write it. So it wasn’t an entirely rational decision, but writers aren’t entirely rational creatures.

Five books later, Martin seems to have grown weary of the world of Westerosi politicking and stepped out to venture into side quests that include HBO adaptations and writing about the adventurousTales of Dunk and Egg. Even penning a doorstop novel about the entire 300-year history of the Targaryen kings – or at least the first half of it – seemed a relatively easy task compared to publishingThe Winds of Winter.

A Song of Ice and FireReaches a Stalemate

George RR Martin may have thought about endingA Game of Throneswith the Starks finding the direwolf pups. But once he began to pen his thoughts on paper, the Starks adopting those pups merely became part of a long story that would involve Night Kings, Battle of the Bastards, the dance of dragons, and the Red Wedding, all of it culminating in the nightmare of a never-ending winter.

However,A Dance With Dragonshas worn out the author, stripped Martin of his feverish enthusiasm, and replaced it with a 13-year (and counting) hiatus. In consequence,A Song of Ice and Fireis stuck in the merciless pit of Martin’s imagination, seething and simmering while trying to find a way out.

Meanwhile, fans remain eternally optimistic aboutThe Winds of Winterdespite the 13-year-long wait, and full of hope despite the betrayal that was HBO’sGame of Thronesfinale, even after an 8-year-long investment. The novel that redefined modern epic fantasy in indescribable proportions now lies stuck in a stalemate as fans both hope and resign to the fact that George RR Martin might never finishA Song of Ice and Fire.

The HBO adaptation,Game of Thronesis available for streaming on Max.
