Hyper Light Breakerisan intense game, even in co-op. You get enemies that can kill you in just a few shots, and a tight parry that heals you if you’re bold enough to risk it.

Things sneak up on you in this game, and before you know it, you’re dead. That means tracking back to earn all your temporary items, and maybe reset the world depending on how bad things get.

The Best Gift Ideas For People Who Love Roguelikes

Not sure what to get your favorite roguelike-addicted loved one or for yourself? Here are the best gifts you’ll be running in loops for.

There are a few counters to this difficulty, but they take knowledge, time, and effort before you’re properly equipped to do so much as fight the first boss.

That said, this survival guide compiles the 8 biggest tips I can give anyone looking to improve their game, die less often, and finish a run for once.

Upgrade Constantly

One of the most obviously powerful things at your fingertips are the items and upgrades you’re able to get, and it’s always a good idea to upgrade as much as possible.

It’s excellent to prioritize the Skill Tree, get the essential upgrades immediately, and go for whatever other upgrades you wish, thoughI recommend rushing to the bottom of the tree.

Aside from that, splurging on better weapons and armor can be a great decision, if you’re confident they’ll make you survive long enough to recoup the cost.

Going for affinities or less necessary things on the skill tree like stamina upgrades is something to avoid, given those resources could be better spent on more useful things.

This game will ask you to never be book smart, be money smart, and avoid making purchases on temporary gear that could be considered a sidegrade.

Splurging for explicitly better things can be a good idea, but you could just save your bright blood and wait for the shop to recycle for something even more effective.

7 Best Roguelike RPGs, Ranked

There have been a lot of great Roguelikes with RPG elements released so far. Here’s a look at some of the absolute best.

This goes especially for your very limited currency that is used exclusively for the Skill Tree and affinities, where I’d say saving that up is a way better decision than going for whatever you see.

For example, you could save it and get the Medkit on tier 4, or you could purchase an extra affinity point and get guns for slightly cheaper, and one of these things is a little bit better.

Stockpiling Health

Medkits are important, because not dying is important, and always having some health on you is the best functional medical plan, even if getting Medkits is a whole process.

Saving up bright blood and using it to refill Medkits mid-run is a pretty good idea, and making sure you don’t drop to a low enough health to get one shot is even better.

Make sure your health never goes under around 25%. If it does, you’re able to farm parries from enemies you’re confident in parrying, pop a medkit, or leave.

I’d recommend gunning for Medkits over anything else on the skill tree and always saving enough bright blood to get a refill, in case you don’t have enough health to extract.

Use Your Range

If you’re low on health, you shouldfocus far more on guns, amps, and projectile-heavy special attacks, essentially anything that gets you away from the enemy.

Some enemies shoot projectiles at you or can close distance far quicker than you can, and the best solution to either of these is just shooting them.

I’d recommend focusing more on upgrading your gun in the early game, then start caring more about Melee. You need to get in some Melee hits to recharge, but not many.

If your gun can quickly kill an enemy, you’ll gain battery a bit faster than you’ll lose it, but a better way to get battery is by building your upgrades around gunplay.

Learn to Build

The few slots you have for Holobytes are the most important thing to min-max, as they can make or break three runs in a row if they’re awful.

I usually find a great sword or gun first, then build my Holobytes around it, with the Holobyte that gives your weapon type extra damage being an absolute necessity.

You can make your Holobytes a jack-of-all-trades build, but the builds where that works are not that common.

You’ll want to focus almost entirely on one thing, and when that thing breaks, move on to another thing, because doing more damage keeps you alive longer.

Risk Assessment

The most important skill to learn inHyper Light Breakeris when to quit. There are plenty of times I could’ve scraped by a combat encounter, but chose to avoid it.

You should always take a few seconds to decide if any decision you’re going to make is worth losing your health over.

A shiny new sword might sound nice, but it’s only worth going for if you’re desperate for something to sell, or if your current weapon isn’t working, otherwise, skip it.

You should think of every combat encounter, every minute you spend in the overgrowth, and every bit of danger you choose to face as another opportunity to die, and avoid what you can.

Dodge and Weave

Sometimes, combat is required, so whenever you’re in an altercation, you’d better use all the defensive tools available, namely complete cowardice.

Don’t be afraid to run away from enemies, to dash away from their attacks instead of trying and failing to parry them, and sometimes you should charge your gun and play at range.

Weaving in and out of combat, picking off enemies one by one, and luring enemies away from the far more dangerous group is a great survival plan, considering your dodge has I-frames for a reason.

There is the occasional undodgeable attack, indicated by the color being red. At that point, you either learn to parry or die, which usually ends in panic and a big chunk of health being lost.

Always Extract

When you’re low on health and just scraping by, it might be tempting to stay and get more resources, but I’d say when you’ve gotten a few things it’s time to leave.

Extracting is key. You can upgrade and keep all your stuff when you’re back to the hub, and the wave of enemies you have to fight isn’t that hard to deal with.

I typically only go in for a few items, namely the most important ones in the vicinity, then immediately head for the extraction point, so I can upgrade again.

If you go in headstrong and try to take on all the bosses, you’ll probably get a reality check pretty swiftly, so things slow, extract, and repeat until you’re 100% confident.
