There is no shortage of unique villains inResident Evil 4 Remake, but being a more action-oriented adventure thanResident Evil 7, for example, no foe players face is unbeatable. With Leon wielding high-powered rifles and submachine guns, even early in the game, it’s entirely possible to tackle whatever Osmund Saddler and his minions can throw at him.

That said, one of the first major boss fights players encounter, El Gigante, may prove difficult for first-timers. It’s a monstrosity and a half, a looming horror towering over our hero, and attacks with a speed and ferocity that makes thecramped arena feel frightening and frantic. Here are the weapons that work best against El Gigante, how to keep up with Leon’s health and ammo needs during the fight, and the tactics that work best to topplethis terrifying foe (one of many in the game)once and for all.

Preparing For The Fight With El Gigante

The first fight —yes, only the first—against El Gigante takes place in Chapter 4, after returning to the Church upon exploring the Lake. The entire boss fight occurs inside a claustrophobic quarry, which players will pass through earlier in the game. If they stop and listen, it’s possible to hear El Gigante sleeping on the first pass-through.

Thankfully, no-one has to fight El Gigante alone. At the beginning of Chapter 3, the sound of an animal whining from the far right sideafter leaving the village chief’s housewill draw attention. Take the short path around, past the troublesome bear traps, and Leon will soon discover an unlikely ally.A white wolf is entangled in a bear trap, and Leon, with a button press from the player, will free the wolf. It runs off into the woods with a backward glance.

Weapon Recommendations

The primary focus of the El Gigante boss fight is to deal as much damage in as short a timeframe as possible. For that, players need to properly equip themselves with powerful weapons that deal both fast and pinpoint accurate damage.

A few worthwhile weapons to snap up at the trader can help. TheTMP submachine gun and SR M1903 sniper rifle are highly recommended purchases. They cost 10,000 pesetas and 12,000 pesetas respectively. These two weapons serve dual purposes. The submachine gun offers a high rate of fire and mobility, while the sniper rifle can pinpoint high-value targets, like the parasite when El Gigante stumbles.

If the money is readily available, it’s recommended that playersupgrade the sniper rifle to at least power level two through the Tune Up menu. A few well-placed rounds from an upgraded rifle will make short work of the parasite on El Gigante’s back when it emerges. It’s not a bad idea toupgrade the ammo capacity of the TMP, too. That way, even with an itchy trigger finger, players can unload from a distance without worrying too much about their stockpile of ammunition.

While the TMP is an excellent close-range weapon capable of throwing a lot of firepower down range in a short timeframe, it chews through ammo quickly. Try to conserve shots by firing in short bursts, and always aim for the head of El Gigante.

How To Defeat El Gigante In The Quarry

The looming monster enjoys hard-hitting attacks, including sweeping arm strikes, ground-shaking stomps, and damaging bash charges. It’s best to avoid the latter at every turn. If the foe does begin a charge, then dodge away to the side. For a sweep attack, step back and put some distance between El Gigante andResident Evil icon Leon.

When not dodging incoming attacks, fans should use the submachine gun to spray as many rounds down range as possible. It’s best to aim for the head whenever possible.El Gigante will take damage anywhere bullets strike, but the head proves most effective.

Upon dealing enough damage, a parasite will emerge from its expansive back. Here is where the sniper rifle comes in handy. Whip it out and start landing carefully-placed shots on the parasite. It only takes a few tries before El Gigante stumbles to his knees, where players may approach and activate a QTE. Leon will remain on the giant’s back, and continually spam the melee attack to slash the parasite further with his knife.

At some point in this arena battle, if the player managed to save the wolf in Chapter 3, their furry friend will leap to the rescue and aid in the boss fight. The wolf will draw El Gigante’s attention, allowing Leon to take time to better strike the head and parasite.

Topping Up On Health And Ammo

During the boss fight, when running low on health and ammo, note two huts within the arena.Inside each, there are much-needed supplies to keep Leon in the fight.

If Leon hangs around inside the shacks for too long, El Gigante will smash through them and destroy the only cover available in the arena. Do not linger!

Otherwise, the best option is to stock up ahead of time. With supplies topped off, a welcome ally on the attack, and that trigger finger itching, keep picking away at El Gigante’s health pool until it finally succumbs to the assault.Above all else, this boss fight is a matter of attrition and timing.

Prepare For Trouble, And Make It Double

The first boss fight against El Gigante may prove relatively simple for one reason. There’s only one El Gigante to battle.Later in the game, during Chapter 11, players will come face-to-face with not one but two El Gigante. One is reminiscent of the one from the quarry fight, but the other is unique as he’s significantly more armored and seemingly indestructible.Thankfully, it’s possible to drop one of the monstrosities into the lava pit using the controls in the room, making the boss fight that much easier. Otherwise, the same weapons and approach prove effective here. That comes much later in the game, though.
