In the movie industry, there are a couple of instances where actors struggle with film scenes with their co-stars for various reasons. And in some cases, actors are cast alongside animals, which also tends to have its own set of challenges based on how well-trained the critter is.
However, it was entirely a bed of roses for Will Smith back in 2007, when the icon had no choice but to spend his days on set with a dog named Abbey. Smith has dominated the industry for many years acting in movies and shows likeBad Boys,The Pursuit of Happiness, andThe Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
InI Am Legend, the storyline is set in a post-apocalyptic world, and his character, Dr. Robert Neville is the lone survivor alongside his dog, Samantha. The movie managed to earn a 7.2/10 score on IMDb while being a 2000s classic that movie lovers always rewatch, literally because of the duo that starred in it.
Will Smith was surprised by his I Am Legend co-star’s abilities
A dog is commonly known as man’s best friend and for Will Smith’s character inI Am Legend,his canine companion was the only other being left for him to survive beside. It turns out, that the 56-year-old actor was impressed by things Abbey could do.
During an episode onHot Oneshosted bySean Evans, the actor, who often gets praised for his work on set put his canine co-star on a pedestal. He claimed that he felt like could understand everything he made her do. He added,
It was like Abbey spoke English. She literally could understand you, it was the weirdest thing…It was like working with a brilliant actress.
Will Smithmade this comment about Abbey because she could do most of her stunts while even playing dead when she had to. That helped Smith maneuver a sad scene toward the end of the film, when Neville had to sacrifice his dog who was infected by the mutants.
That could easily pass off as one of the most upsetting scenes in the history of movies. Smith also expressed his intention to adopt Abbey, but the offer to add her to his brood couldn’t be accepted as she was her family’s sole breadwinner.

Smith lovinglyposted a videomontage dedicated to Abbey on National Pets Day in April 2024, which clearly shows how much he loves her. He captioned the video “The goodness girl” and it featured a bunch of clips taken from the movie and a few from when they were on set together.

It has been over a decade since the firstI Am Legendmovie came, and nobody knew if it would return with a sequel especially based on how Dr. Robert Neville tragically dies in the film.
However, after months of working on the script, Will Smith toldScreen Daily(viaMSN), that the story was finally complete and that he would be pitching the idea of havingMichael B. Jordanstar in the sequel.
Without giving out much details, Smith stated that the film will feature a storyline in which Dr. Neville is still alive. TheI Am Legendsequel will once again feature Francis Lawrence as the director, and Akiva Goldsman will be a producer on set this time.
