The hit Amazon Prime seriesThe Boys, which was launched in the summer of 2019, is approaching its end. With its gritty, satirical and adult take on the superhero genre, the franchise has managed to carve out a special place for itself.

This funny and dynamic blend of the unconventional superhero world with out-of-pocket comedy captivated hearts across the globe and became an integral part of pop culture. Going strong with having its fourth season released and well-received earlier this year, fans did not expect the next season to be the final one. Show creator Eric Kripke shocked fans when he announced the same. However, he did explain his reason behind choosing to pull the plug on a hit show. Read ahead to understand Kripke’s reasoning.
The BoysIs Set To Conclude With Its Fifth Season

It was during the release week of season 4 that Kripke took to X to make the big announcement. Sharing a carefully hidden picture of the script of the fourth season’s finale episode on hisXaccount, Kripke said:
Season 4 Premiere Week is a good time to announce: Season 5 will be the Final Season!

#TheBoysSeason 4 Premiere Week is a good time to announce: Season 5 will be the Final Season! Always my plan, I just had to be cagey till I got the final OK from Vought. Thrilled to bring the story to a gory, epic, moist climax. Watch Season 4 in 2 DAYS, cause the end has begun!pic.twitter.com/3p7Wt4jGA6
Kripke also mentioned that this is how he always intended things to be.

Always Been The Plan
For years, Eric Kripke has teased that theThe BoysTV series will be a five-season act. However, there was always a possibility of the show extending. Mainly because the executive producerhad made a similar announcement for his showSupernatural, which ended up having fifteen seasons.

Kripke is well aware of his reputation in the matter of bringing TV shows to a close. As he said in a statement on hisXaccount in 2020 viaComicbook:
The rough idea in my head is five seasons total, but I also know better than to say how many seasons a show is going to have because my last show Supernatural I said ‘Five seasons for sure,’ and then that f**ker went fifteen. So I’m mostly going to keep my mouth shut but creatively five feels like a good round number.

Seems like this time around, Kripke is sure of the direction he’s heading in by bringingThe Boysto a conclusion.
Why Is Season 5 the Last One?
The Boyswill bid adieu after returning for their fifth season. The fans of the show were not pleased with this. However, showrunner Kripke explained his reasoning behind this in an interview withEntertainment Weekly, saying:
Part of it is such a wonky stupid screenwriter thing but three and five are the big magical numbers for writing. Three is movie acts, TV acts are five. Jokes are a runner of three for five. Five just seems like a good round number. It’s enough to tell the story but also bring it to a climax without wearing out its welcome. It’s been hard because I haven’t been able to tell everyone. I was thrilled to finally be able to get the word out there.

Being the seasoned filmmaker he is, Kripke believes in a defined endpoint for the series. And forThe Boys, he believes that five seasons strike the perfect balance. The narrative building and the climax are all tools so that the series does not overstay its welcome. Although, a sixth season of the gritty superhero comedy would have certainly been more than welcome.
Season 4’s Perfect Setup Towards an End
To achieve a smooth and impactful conclusion to the show, the makers carefully crafted an ending for season 4, which was released in June 2024 to rave reviews and immense praise. However, the unresolved arc of the show felt like the storyline approaching to climax. This was done on purpose as a signal to the audience that the series was finally reaching its conclusion. As Kripke toldEntertainment Weekly:
That was part of my argument: No one can watch this season without feeling at the end like ‘It’s ending next year right?’ So we might as well announce it so people can watch it with that cool epic heading-toward-the-end feeling, which is what I’m hoping for.
This decision to bring the mighty but short journey to an end is based on prioritizing quality over quantity. It has become a common occurrence in the entertainment industry where shows are stretched for several seasons, losing quality and audience interest.

Kripke’s approach toThe Boyssignifies his confidence in the quality of the show he has created and the spin-offs, likeGen V,it has churned out.
