With just over a month having passed since the release ofBaldur’s Gate 3, calls from players for additional content have been getting louder. For developer Larian Studios, the matter has not been as simple as ‘We are/are not working on DLC’, with studio head Swen Vincke and other senior developers alluding to a slim possibility of future content.

Shortly after the game’s full release, Vincke was interviewed byPC Gamerand the topic of downloadable content arose. “Honestly, we haven’t started on an expansion,” he confirmed before going on to speak about the difficulties of adapting post-level 12 adventures due to the lopsided balance of Dungeons & Dragons levelling.

“These adventures require a different way of doing things, in terms of the antagonists you’re going to have to deal with, which require a lot of development to do them properly. Which would make this much more than an expansion in terms of development effort. A lot of D&D adventures are sub-level 12 for precisely that reason. So it sounds like neat, easy expansion material until you start thinking about it and it’s not as easy as one would imagine,” Vincke said.

In the same interview, he said they were wary of confirming anything before it was ready to be revealed because circumstances are always changing. Vincke would maintain this attitude in future interviews.

Then, at Gamescom 2023, senior product manager Tom Butler spoke toIGNon the topic. Butler’s comments sounded more promising, but naturally, they were still noncommittal. “We’ll carry on patching for a while, and then we’re all going to take a holiday, and then we’ll figure out what we do next. But at the moment, we genuinely have discussions. We want to do more. We don’t know what yet," Butler said.

Then recently, Vinckewas interviewedby Dungeons & Dragons video producer Todd Kenreck who once again probed the studio head on the future of Baldur’s Gate 3. He reiterated that working with a higher level cap would be “very hard” but “not undoable.”

Perhaps more promisingly, Vincke also said “Well, you could do different things, so it doesn’t necessarily have to be at the end of the game. There’s different ways you’re able to do that.” So, while we may not be getting additional late-game content, there is potential for expansions that could occur in the middle of the game or standalone one-shots.
