In an interview withPCGamerearlier this week, Arrowhead Game Studios' CEO Johan Pilestedt told the outlet that there was “an actual person with the job title of Game Master” forHelldivers 2. After learning of this individual’s existence (who is called Joel), fans have been rallying to have the dev officially integrated into the game’s lore.
While fellow Helldivers are clearly joking (we hope), Game Master Joel has skyrocketed to fame within the community, spawning various memes, jokes, and general discussions.

Helldivers 2 Dev Gives Promising Update On Future Weapon Buffs
Another win for democracy!
For those who might not be up to date on the latest Helldivers 2 news, Game Master Joel is an individual developer who is in charge of the game’s massive galactic war. While players around the world fight together to liberate various planets from the bugs and automatons, now and then they’ll fight back and reclaim a planet.
Until Arrowhead confirmed that there was one almighty figure in charge of the decision-making, many believed it was just completely random. Players were evenmourning the loss of Malevelon Creekearlier this week, an automaton-infested planet that a small number of Helldivers were fighting hard to claim. Sadly, Joel had other ideas, and Malevelon Creek fell, sparking endless memesin the community.

Game Master Joel Becomes A Helldivers Legend
Amidst all of the memes and jokes, some players are urging Arrowhead to make Joel a genuine part of the game’s lore. Some went along with the joke, others took it a little more seriously.
“I think it’s time we officially make Joel part of the lore. Joel should considered a god in the helldivers world. “Thank Joel” “oh my Joel” “in Joel we trust.” It just makes sense since he’s essentially the god of this universe.” - Reddit userAffectionate-Duck-51wrote.

Some users responded by saying they would rather blame Joel for everything that goes wrong. Instead of looking at Joel as a Helldivers god, some believe the developer should be viewed as an enemy. No matter which way you look at it, there’s one man pulling the strings, and we better get used to it.
Not everyone sees Joel as a bad guy, in aseparate post, other players referred to him as the “God of War,” with some even petitioning for it to become his official title as it’s “more lore friendly.”
Personally, I’m not sure how some of you folks can praise Joel. I haven’t forgotten about Malevelon Creek.
