First announced during the Game Awards 2019, the sequel to the critically acclaimedHellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice,Hellblade 2was high on everyone’s wish list (mine included). The Ninja Theory title had pretty big boots to fill this time around and even though themarketing surrounding the gamewasn’t the best, fans were still excited about getting stuck into the hellish world of Senua once more.

Finally released on May 21 this year, we haven’t heard too much about Hellblade 2’s sales and how well (or not) it had done, but recent Xbox chart figures show what we had unfortunately expected.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 Stumbles In All The Wrong Places

Just like Senua in this new story, Hellblade 2 constantly feels unnecessary.

May Was Not Hellblade 2’s Month

According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella on Twitter/X, whopostedabout video game sales data yesterday, Hellblade 2 fell very short in terms of selling expectations. The Ninja Theory title came 37th on the chart for full-dollar sales in May 2024 and totaled 21st place on Xbox Series consoles. In terms of how well it did on Xbox Game Pass, that wasn’t great news either, as it ranked 12th place here but just ahead of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Apex Legends, and Forza Horizon 5.

On Steam, Hellblade managed to pull in 3,982 concurrent players at its peak, but sadly, this number further dwindled over the weeks and this disappointment stretched over to Twitch as well where the game saw 110,193 viewers when it launched but a week later, falling to 900. As an extra knife twist, Hellblade 2 didn’t manage to make it into the Top 100 European sales charts either, which is a reason why its sales hadn’t been recorded until Piscatella did some digging.

It’s certainly a sad state of affairs for the multi-talented Ninja Theory studio who have busted their backs to make Hellblade 2 just as big of a success as the first Hellblade.

Unfortunately, as previously noted, the game’s horrible and lackluster marketing surely didn’t help the title’s chances. Regardless, Hellblade 2 is still sitting at a decent score of 80 onMetacriticand a “very positive” placement onSteam.
