Usually, whenever a company does wrong to its consumers, there is nothing one can do to make them change their decision. Fortunately, that is not how it worked out between Sony and theHelldivers 2player base, where millions taking part in democracy came together to make the studio reverse one of its major policies.

The studio came under fire last year for mandating a PSN login for those who wanted to enjoy PlayStation’s first-party games on PC. While the mandate made sense at first, it did not sit right with many users. This brings us to today, with the company officially backing out of the mandate and making it optional for a range of their games available on PC.
Sony versus Helldivers 2: A never-ending struggle
When the galaxy-exploring co-op title first came out last year, it was all over the internet, evenreaching the top of Steam Chartsin no time. However, just as it was enjoying the peak of its players, the publishing studio behind the gamerolled out a mandatethat changed the course of history for the game forever.Sonyessentially got rid of a majority of players in an attempt to mine for data by introducing a necessary PSN requirement. Not only did it restrict countless numbers of players from countries where the service wasn’t available, but the controversy went so out of hand that thestudio had to step back at the time.

Unfortunately, this did not stop the studio from introducing the same mandate in the yet-to-be-released PlayStation titles on PC at the time, not until recently, when Sony, as noted byThe Verge, officially announced how a PSN account would no longer be required to enjoy titles such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, and more.
While this remains an ultimate win for the player base, it remains important to note the contributions of theHelldivers 2players who paved the way with their love for democracy in order to get rid of the company’s tyranny over the user base.

Helldivers 2 and its inspiring struggle against the PSN mandate
There remains no doubt that the struggles ofHelldivers against the big corporationultimately intimidated the studio into backing out from its own requirements. It is also something the players are very proud of, which can be seen on the game’s official subreddit.
While the fight is not over, not until the requirement is made optional for all games across the board, it remains a small victory to be celebrated in a war that is far from ending anytime soon.

Many are hoping that Sony will eventually come around and remove the requirement in its entirety one day. Till then, it is up to Helldivers and their never-dying patriotism for democracy to keep the will of gamers and their freedom alive.
