The shocking revelation at the end ofGame of Thronesseason finale had us all gasping in disbelief—almost a decade’s worth of dramatic twists and devastating deaths and the Three-Eyed Raven ended up becoming the King of the Six Kingdoms.

Bran Stark played a significant role in the show, but he wasn’t an active participant in the politics of Westeros as much as the likes of Daenerys Targaryen or Cersei Lannister. It’s still a mystery for many fans why he was chosen to become the leader since he lacked connections and even an army. This is something that the author needs to address and rectify in the upcoming novel.
King Bran Stark was George R.R. Martin’s idea
Isaac Hempstead Wrightrevealed in a behind-the-scenes interview with HBO that the decision to make Bran Stark the king came fromGeorge R.R. Martinhimself. Even the actor did not believe it for a second when he read the script and thought it was a prank. He said (viaEntertainment Weekly):
[Creators] David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] told me there were two things [author] George R.R. Martin had planned for Bran, and that was the Hodor revelation, and that he would be king. So that’s pretty special to be directly involved in something that is part of George’s vision. It was a really nice way to wrap it up.

The Hodor revelation was a significant part of Bran’s story and one of the most tragic scenes in the show. He died at the hands of the White Walkers after the young boy warged into his body and seized control of his mind. While this was extremely unexpected, the author planned a more mind-blowing surprise for all the fans—he wanted Bran to become the ruler of Westeros.
This suggests that he might also want to follow the same choice in his upcoming book. The majority of viewers had mixed reactions after Tyrion Lannister claimed that Bran had the best story and that he was fit to rule due to his life experiences. This made no sense because we’ve witnessed his journey across eight seasons, and he never showed any signs of great leadership.

There are a lot of reasons why Bran wasn’t the most suitable choice for the throne, and Martin needs to take a second look at the character, especially now that he’s deep in writingThe Winds of Winter.

The show made an unsatisfactory conclusion, and this included Bran the Broken’s ending. The only hope of a better narrative lies in Martin’s long-overdue book that’s been in the works for more than a decade now. He has recentlymade an update aboutThe Winds of Winter, although it looks like we have to hang on for a while.
