The Premature Death Arc ofJujutsu Kaisenis one of the most important and heartwrenching arcs in the story. While it is in the past of the series’ main events, it includes one of the most pivotal points ofJujutsu Kaisen, from introducing central jujutsu society lore to Satoru Gojo’s past. It introduced a bunch of characters who aren’t with us today, like Riko Amanai, Yu Haibara, and Toji Fushiguro.

While Riko’s budding friendship with Geto and Gojo was the central plot of the Premature Death Arc, there was one more death that influenced a wave of emotions and events through the main characters of the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College. Yu Haibara, a classmate of Kento Nanami, is a minor character who also died incredibly young, just like Riko. However, fans have observed that his death affected more people withinJujutsu Kaisen.
Yu Haibara’s Influence inJujutsu Kaisenis Subtle Yet Devastating
Yu Haibara was an enthusiastic first-year student enrolled in the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College who was selfless and always on board to help. He fought curses with the purpose of protecting others and always passionately took on missions. He also admired Geto and Gojo’s strength, willing to aid them whenever they needed, despite Nanami’s disapproval and cautious behaviour. Unfortunately, during a mission where the curse’s grade was a rank above, the young student died. This effectively bent Nanami and Geto’s thoughts on the world of jujutsu sorcery.
Out of the Tokyo 5, four died. Each & every single death had monumental impact. Haibara dies first & it makes Geto snap and Nanami quit, fracturing everything. He is the “Premature Death” that set a series of events in motion, but mainly, made Geto question the nature of sorcery.pic.twitter.com/ADdSDV9NhX

While Nanami was already sceptical about the nature of sorcery, Haibara’s death was the last straw for Geto Suguru and led him to his radicalized anti-non-sorcerer ideology. He massacred an entire village on his next mission and vowed to kill all non-sorcerers.His moral regressionwas set in stone after Riko’s death but Haibara’s positive approach to sorcery was what kept him afloat.

Nanami, on the other hand, was closer to Haibara and even remembered the young boy when he was at death’s door too. He acted as a guide to Nanami to Yuji Itadori, who many fans believe reminds the blond sorcerer of the fallen boy. Moreover, he was in the afterlife whenGojo was defeated by Sukunaas well. So, despite being a minor character, his influence was felt heavily.
Why Haibara’s Death Represents What’s Wrong with Jujutsu Society
The higher-ups that Satoru Gojo famously hates with a passion are indirectly responsible for Haibara’s death. The young sorcerer was strong in his own right but they sent him on a mission without verifying the grade of the curse that ended up outranking him. It shows how little they actually care about the lives of sorcerers, as long as they are ready to give their lives up. Haibara’s death cemented this belief to Nanami who took a break from jujutsu sorcery.
Gojo’s Death May Have Been the Best Thing that Happened to the World of Jujutsu Kaisen and Gege Akutami was a Genius for It
So, why did a minor character get such an influential death? An anime can’t always feature iconic main characters. Some will be in the shadows while influencing future events indirectly. But more importantly, it shows how easy it is to die in the world ofJujutsu Kaisen, and what was coming for the other characters. It’s easy to take on a job that you’re good at but at what cost?
