When it comes to platformers, the company most associated with the genre is undoubtedly Nintendo and its Mario franchise. However, Sony carved its own niche last year with the release of Team Asobi’sAstro Bot.
The success of Astro Bot is very hard to miss given it won The Game Awards' Game of the Year, alongside other award-giving bodies. There’s another award Team Asobi can add to a growing collection, and it’s the New York Game Awards' top prize.

Astro Bot Wins New York Game Awards Game of the Year
Team Asobi’s adorable platformer was nominated for four awards: Best Kids Game, Best Music in a Game, Best World, and Game of the Year. Astro Bot managed to snag three of the four awards, with Best World going to Elden Ring.
Hosting and presenting the award was former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé who paid tribute to Team Asobi’s charming little title.

“So I have to admit it, Astro Bot almost outdid Nintendo at its own game,” Fils-Aimé said, which drew some laughs to the people in attendance.
Astro Bot is considered the surprise hit of 2024, as I doubt anyone would have expected the game to garner this much critical praise. Over onOpen Critic, the game not only has a “Mighty” rating, but it even has an unprecedented 99% of critics recommending it.

Since it’s release, Team Asobi has pushed out multiple updates that introduced new speedrun levels and bots, all for free. The last update players received was theWinter Wonder patchlast month to celebrate the holidays.
While nothing has been announced yet, I wouldn’t be surprised to see another slate of content planned for Astro Bot for 2025.

To date, Sony has said that Astro Bot has sold 1.5 million copies, and this was back in November. Chances are, the game has sold a large chunk to add to that number given the numerous accolades it has received since then. The game’s impressive debut puts it in history asone of the 10 best platform game launchesof all-time.
