The Last of Us' HBOseries has finally gotten a full 90-second trailer as part of the yearly ‘The Last of Us Day’ celebration. The trailer is packed with previously unseen footage, and it gives fans the first real look at characters like Ellie, Riley, and Bill, as well as the unsettling infected Clickers.

Whether these actors are good fits for the characters we know and love is subjective, and will depend on each individual. Not to mention these clips only give us only a short taste of the charactersvisually, and we still know basically nothing about the merit of their performances. Regardless, we do get to see characters, mostly Bella Ramsey as Ellie, participating in a multitude of scenes, some of which can be easily recognized from the game and others that look completely original.

The montage of scenes occurring from about the 55th to the 65th second includes several unrecognizable moments, that are either totally new or different representations of story beats from the original 2013 title. Among them includes a scene of a female character looking at a street filled with government army men fighting some unknown enemy, a scene of Bill aiming a shotgun at Joel who’s in some kind of ditch, and most curiously, a scene of two people with fancy clothes holding hands at a dinner table, glasses of wine and china beside them. In the original story, no post-outbreak community had advanced so much to be able to have dinners or clothes that looked like that, so either the show is veering starkly from the source material, or it’s going to implement flashbacks.

The trailer ended with a simple ‘2023’ flashing on the screen. HBO has yet to commit to any sort of release window beyond the year, but fans are hopeful that the show will come sooner rather than later. The Last of Usgame was developed by Naughty Dog and originally launched in 2013, exclusively on thePlayStation3. The title received a remaster for PlayStation 4 in 2014, and then asequelin 2020. Most recently, the original 2013 title was remade in the form of The Last of Us Part 1, which was released earlier this month.

The Last of Us is widely regarded as one of the best video game stories of all time, so it’s no surprise it’s getting adapted to the small screen, especially given the recent wave of successful video game adaptations. The trailer clearly shows there’s a lot of production value behind it, and with HBO being its studio, there’s a reason for fans to be optimistic.
