Back in March, Square Enixlaunched a Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary siteand prequel book that got fans excited, since it seemed like a precursor to something big.

While no hints or teases have been given, there are a lot of goodies Final Fantasy 9 fans can look forward to later this week to mark the RPG’s 25th Anniversary.

Final Fantasy 9’s Anniversary Kicks Off July 9

Final Fantasy 9’s 25th Anniversary officially kicks off on July 9, but Square Enix has started the festivities by announcing merchandise, art work and even a prequel picture book.

Moreover, Square Enix has recently released a short movie to commemorate the game (embedded above), though don’t expect much from it. The “movie” is just a minute long, and it’s comprised of highlights from the game’s FMV portion, edited over a recording of the game’s music theme.

However, leading up to the big day, Square Enix has a few things lined up, with one particular item that has fans excited. There’s anew vinylset to be released later this week titled “Timeless Tales,” which some believe is the title of the FF9 remake.

If you’re wondering why fans are convinced there’s a remake on the way, it’s because of he now-infamous Nvidia leak happened in 2021.

The leak mentioned titles such as the Chrono Cross remaster and the Final Fantasy Tactics remaster, and these titles have turned out to be the real deal. So, why would the FF9 remake be different, right?

Square Enix’s One-Word Message Has People Clamoring For Final Fantasy 10 Remake

Square Enix’s tweet has sent Final Fantasy 10 fans speculating on a remake or sequel.

Released in July 2000 for the PS1, Final Fantasy 9 might not be as popular as Final Fantasy 7 or FF8, but it’s still considered one of the best entries in the franchise. Contrary to FF7 and FF8, Final Fantasy 9 brought the franchise back to its roots by featuring a less mature story and art style, and it also brought back the series' familiar black mage in the form of Vivi.

While we’re hoping for a FF9 remake announcement from Square Enix, the possibility of it happening is, admittedly, slim. If the company wants to remake a Final Fantasy game after Final Fantasy 7, chances are it’ll be FF8, given that it’s way more popular than FF9.

As a fan of Final Fantasy 9, I’m still hoping we’ll get a remake announcement at some point, but is it happening on July 9? I wouldn’t bet on it. However, I would LOVE to be proven wrong.

When it comes to remakes, Final Fantasy 7 still has its concluding chapter in development, but the two entries in the trilogy have proven Square Enix can bring the classic RPG back to a more modern gaming landscape. In particular, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth managed to impress a lot of players, as itnot only snagged high scores from critics, but it also won numerous Game of the Year/Best RPG awards too.

When it comes to Final Fantasy 9, wepublished a review of it in 2017where we mentioned, “Final Fantasy IX still holds up as one of the best RPGs ever made, but that’s not to say that modern RPGs have fallen behind. Instead, Final Fantasy IX is a collection of growth discovered through the classic years of the RPG genre all brought into one fantastic experience.”
