Assigning Pokemon to represent different chess pieces, this fan made the ultimate 3D-printed Pokemon-themed chess set.
Fans have been creating game mash-ups for years, combiningMinecraftwithGenshin ImpactorDoom EternalwithAnimal Crossing: New Horizons. These crossovers have led to some interesting combinations (Doomguy and Isabelle? Strangely wholesome!), and they speak to the creativity of games' fanbases.

One fan and their friend decided to mash-up two unlikely games for one gorgeous-looking craft -Pokemonand chess. Using water-type Pokemon from the Generation I games, these fans created the ultimatePokemon-themed chess sets.
U/PHILLSERRAZINA’S POKEMON-THEMED CHESS SETS
In a post made to the r/gaming subreddit, u/PhillSerrazina shows off a shining chess board adorned with black and white Pokemon pieces. Using resin as their base of choice, they 3D printed a complete chess set, using water-type Pokemon instead of the traditional pieces.
On the board, they used a squadron of Squirtles to take the place of the pawn pieces. Standing tall in the back center of the boards are a Blastoise King and Gyrados Queen. Additionally, the other pieces are replaced by Seadras, Poliwraths, and a Vaporeon atop a rook tower.

The clean simplicity of contrast between the two sides really makes the Pokemon pieces pop on the wooden board. Though not as colorful as Pokemon usually are, the clean palette adds an air of elegance that’s perfectly fitting for chess.
Another Redditor suggested that Magikarp should take the place of Squirtle for the pawns, so that it matched with the Gyrados queen. Conceptually, it does make sense, but it’s hard to deny that there’s something extra cute about the Squirtle pieces!

This isn’t the first time u/PhillSerrazina and their friend crafted a Pokemon-themed chess set. In fact, the two had created a fire-type themed set just a few months prior. Also focusing on Gen I Pokemon, they set up their fire-type board with a Charizard King and Moltres Queen.
The creator mentioned that they’re working on combining the two sets to create a Fire vs Water themed board. Word is, they’re also planning on throwing in some grass-type Pokemon into the mix for their final version. Whatever direction they go in, we’ll be sure to keep our eyes out for it!
