The mod was born from a desire to go beyond the normal limits for tinkering with Nier Automata through technological means that players thought were impossible at the time. The reason this mod has gained traction all over the Internet is because it looked very much like the real thing — like an actual cut section from the game. The whole thing was a clever teaser for advanced, less enticing add-ons and scripting tools that a team of three talented modders has created, and they have enjoyed seeing players attempt to figure out and theorize about what was going on. It was a necessary step to fuel speculations about the potential of the game and how far can creators go with it.

The mod is at least an hour long and can be accessed from a hidden door in the Copied City level in 9S’s route. As soon as you enter the door, you get to watch a small cutscene showing a dead girl with a white flower on her chest. The flower is an obvious call back to Drakengrad 3 and Zero, the main heroine. In fact, there is a simple boss fight at the end of the modded section where you get to fight a digitized copy of her, and a few lines after the fight seem to indicate someone is talking to Zero herself. It says how much they have missed her and loved being with her, which are probably the mod developer’s own feelings for the game and the impression it left on him.

The team, consisting of users DevolasRevenge, Woeful_Wolf_, and RaiderB, left a thank-you message for the players at the end of the modded section, along with a promise that there is more in store, so interested players should be on the lookout for any upcoming news. Thetoolsare already available for anyone who would like to try something similar, but the team advises installing theMod Helpertool first to make the process easier. The team also suggests that players are at least around level 90 and remove chips such as Overclock and Shock Wave so they will not be too overpowered for the challenge.

This is just the first version of the mod, so it is advised that players do not attempt to play the normal story with this mod installed until a more stable version is released. This mod is a very big breakthrough for the Nier and Drakengrad fan base who still look fondly on the heritage of Yoko Taro and would love nothing more than to see these classic gems on modern platforms. The entire journey has proved that the fandom is still alive and would be interested in any related Yoko Taro content, whether it were real or not. The creator was also very aware of how muchtractionthis mod has generated, and maybe it will reflect in some way on the currently ongoing Nier Reincarnation story or the upcoming Nier entry.
