Amazon has finally dropped its new trailer for the belovedFalloutfranchise, and it looks bloody awesome. To be frank, I really wasn’t expecting much when I heard Fallout would be getting an adaptation makeover and, in the back of my mind, I merely chalked it down to something that might not come across well due to being previously burnt by this ever-growing concept of bringing video games to the small screen (hello Halo), and in the process, piss lots of fans off, but how wrong was I?

Straight off the bat, the Fallout trailer captured that 1950s style post-apocalyptic wasteland amazingly, and if the writing is as good as that explosive three-minute clip, itmighteven give HBO’sThe Last of Usa run for its money and, with Westworld’s director Jonathan Nolan’s creative mind at the helm, it looks like we will need to double buckle our seat belts. But what makes this very short preview a great, at least so far, video game adaptation?

The Constant Tropifying Of Fallout Needs To Stop

Fallout has become a parody of itself.

Monsters and Mutants and Robots, Oh My!

Of course, it’s still too soon to make a wild statement that Fallout will make its way into the list of the best video game adaptations, but for me, and in only the space of just over three minutes, I was truly blown away by how many references there were to the game itself. Right from the beginning of the trailer, we see Cooper Howard giving an introduction video to the vault system, which I recognized straight away from my time in the character creation section in Fallout 4, and how it’s so eerily similar to this exact recording.

Being a huge fan of all things apocalyptic, I loved seeing the vast emptiness of the game’s wasteland being used to its full effect. In one scene, we see The Ghoul, played by Walter Goggins, taking a walk with a canine companion, which is a big part of the Fallout games, through the barren California desert with a destroyed Randy’s Donuts in the distance. Even though this is a real, and iconic, food chain and landmark in the sunshine state, it could also be seen as a throwback to the Coffee and Donuts Workshop Pack in Fallout 4’s Creation Club content.

Maybe one of the most noticeable implements from the franchise that made its way into the trailer for me is that there are two separate scenes where the Vault-Tec bobbleheads are on display - one in a rundown store that Lucy is searching and the other one on a table, giving way to the classic collectible figures found throughout the Fallout games.

Another very exciting feature that really draws on how much they have thought about what they were adding to the trailer is witnessing the robot Mister Handy, voiced by Matt Berry, as it tries to harvest Lucy’s organs and also getting eyeballs on, what looks to be, a giant Wanamingo with actual hands this time jumping out of the water.

Fallout 4

While on the topic of mutant creatures, please don’t tell me it was just me who clapped when they saw the Yao guai from Fallout 4? The huge mutant bear from the game was a stellar choice to add to the trailer because of how it really adds to the dangerous environment Fallout is set in, and it’s not just raiders that pose a threat. There were even a few super cool New Vegas details scattered into the trailer that included the seal of the NCR on a flag towards the end of the preview and also witnessing Shady Sands on the billboard, indicating that it will be the official base of operations for the NCR in the series.

All in all, I haven’t been this excited and invested in a trailer, as short as it is, since HBO’s The Last of Us, which is one of my favorite adaptations, includingThe Witcher, of all time. And what really makes it special for me, if you couldn’t tell already, is just how much the producers have thought about what Fallout fans would like to see, not just what theythoughtwould work, and this comes from listening constantly to the community.

Here’s hoping they can continue with this trend throughout the series, because I have huge hopes for this one. Roll on April 11!

Could A New Version Of Fallout New Vegas Be On The Way?

They asked me how well I understood theoretical games. I said I had a theoretical degree in games.
