Weathers had always been an active man mainly due to his experience as a former football player and his boxing stint as Apollo Creed. Unfortunately, he had an accident that forever changed his body for the worse.

While his time spent on the set was only for a short while, he left the production with an injury that changed the rest of his life.

Speaking withGQ Magazine, the late star revealed he sustained his back injury due to a blind fall. The stunt bag was not pushed all the way against the wall so when he went out backwards, his body got trapped in a position where his head was on the bag and his tailbone at the wall. He said he felt the pain and burning sensation instantly.

As a tough actor and athlete, he kept going and finished the movie. It was only years later that he discovered something was wrong with his spine.

I fractured two vertebrae and osteophytes grew out and connected and it did a kind of self-fuse in a really bad place. There were three or four years there where I was just in excruciating pain.

He went to several doctors and ultimately got exhausted with clinic check-ups so he sought out surgeons instead. One from a notable hospital in Los Angeles told him, “You don’t want us to touch that. We can only make it worse.” Surprisingly, after four years, it started to calm down. For three consecutive years, he did not feel any serious pain.

When asked how he dealt with the injury, he took pride in being an athlete who knew how to live with pain. Although he used the word debilitating to describe his situation, he never let it get in the way of enjoying life.
