Hideo Kojima in an interview

The year’s most anticipated film of the yearDeadpool & Wolverineopened earlier this week to rave reviews. While some sections of the audience found the film to be overstuffed, many were welcoming of the merc-with-the-mouth and Wolverine’s MCU debut.

Despite a divisive response, the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starrer seems to have found a fan in popular game developer Hideo Kojima. TheMetal Geardesigner took to X (formerly Twitter) to appreciate the film and also gave a special shoutout to Jackman’s return as Wolverine.

Hideo Kojima’s Tearful Message To Hugh Jackman Satisfies Hardcore Fans

Seven years afterHugh Jackmanhung up his claws inLogan, the actor returned to the screen as Wolverine inDeadpool & Wolverine. Finally getting to don his comic-accurate suit and back with his signature ‘bub’, Jackman was the highlight of the film, which seems to have received a divisive response.

However, game developer and auteurHideo Kojimaseems to have liked the film. Kojima penned a heartfelt note about the meta-commentary in the film about superheroes and the genre itself. He mentioned in his statement how the film would be a turning point in the age of the ‘hero verse’ and the ‘fifth wall’.

Kojima also appreciated Hugh Jackman’s performance in the film and mentioned that he teared up watching him as he remembered his twenty-four-year tenure as the Wolverine. Fans seemed to be ecstatic at the video game giant’s stamp of approval.

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine

I watched “Deadpool & Wolverine.”It goes far beyond the “fourth wall” between real and fictional, between the creators and the fans, but also past the walls of not only the title and studio, but all hero movies and parodies outside of the MCU. “Stranger Things trained me…”: Deadpool & Wolverine Director Shawn Levy Has Vowed to Never Make the Same MCU Mistake as Tom Holland, Mark Ruffalo

Deadpool & WolverineOpened To A Divisive Response From Critics

Marvel has faced a significant slump in the past few years, with its previous theatrical entryThe Marvelsbeing its lowest-grosser and a box office bomb. With that in mind, Marvel chief Kevin Feige decided to release onlyDeadpool & Wolverinethis year, with other films such asCaptain America: Brave New WorldandThunderbolts*being pushed.

While fans loved Deadpool and Wolverine’s entry into the MCU, critics seemed to be divided. Many tended to view the film as overstuffed with jokes, cameos, and sluggish action sequences. With the Fox-Disney merger being the cause forRyan Reynoldsjoining the MCU, plenty of jokes aimed at the event were criticized by the critics (viaThe Wrap).

According toThe Guardian, which gave the film three stars, the film relied heavily on the jokes about the merger,

It cheerfully (if sheepishly) makes mock of the MCU’s cosmic timeline shenanigans which permit characters to be brought back to life and even does loads of very tiresome corporate in-jokes about Disney taking over Fox, presumably on the basis that civilians care as much about this as the Hollywood combatants. Reynolds is often funny, sometimes very funny, periodically entirely unbearable, often a weird and interesting mix of the three.

While the critics’ score onRotten Tomatoesseems to be at 80%, the lowest of the three films featuring Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, the audience score seems to be at a higher 97%.

Deadpool & Wolverineis now playing in cinemas.
