Eric Kripke has been pretty vocal about his admiration forThe X-Files, as the showrunner once confessed to being obsessed with the sci-fi show during its peak years on TV. His love for the renowned TV show would later contribute to his breakout hit,Supernatural, which proved to be one of the most beloved and longest-running CW shows of all time.

WhileThe X-FilesandSupernaturalwere noticeably different, as the latter leaned more towards the fantasy bit in contrast to the former’s more scientific approach, Kripke did confess to being heavily inspired by it.

Eric Kripke preferredThe X-Files‘ structure forSupernatural

Despite being vastly different in their mythologies, it’s not hard to see thesimilarities between the two hit shows, especially in their structure. Although shows likeHeroesandLostheavily emphasized the mythology aspect, this wasn’t exactly upEric Kripke‘s alley, as the showrunner confessed (viaThe Futon Critic),“My own taste isn’t to have endless mythology”.

Instead,The Boysshowrunner preferred taking a page from the early seasons ofThe X-Files, which didn’t exactly rely on an overarching mythology that spanned several seasons. This meant that viewers were free to join in at any time, which Kripke personally preferred.

So I was much more a fan of the early ‘X-Files’ structure… early ‘X-Files’ which is mostly standalones interspersed within the mythology which I think is probably more our structure. And that just kind of works for me. We don’t want viewers to feel like they’re out of the loop. We want them to feel like they can join the party at any time. Not that those shows aren’t great shows. It’s just personal taste.

Given the show’s longevity and success, it’s safe to say that Kripke’s decision to follow inThe X-Files‘ footsteps was the optimal way to go.

Eric Kripke lacked self-esteem during his initial years onSupernatural

Even though Kripke’s approach toSupernaturalproved to be pretty successful, the showrunner wasn’t initially confident that his original five-year plan would ever come to fruition. Given his struggle with self-esteem issues at the time, when the discussions regarding a sixth season started emerging, Kripke was reasonably bewildered (viaIGN).

Because I have low self-esteem, I never dreamt the show would go five years. And so I had a five year plan, and now I’m here in the fifth season and it’s doing well and I’m like the girl with glasses in the teen comedy. Everyone wants to go into a sixth season and I was a little bewildered by it. I think that’s why earlier I was so adamant about saying, ‘It’s five seasons!’, was because I never thought we’d go this distance.

Although Kripke didn’t return for the sixth season, he did succeed in concluding his run on the show on a high note.
