FromSoftware’s critically acclaimed action RPG,Elden Ring, is set to receive its first (and only) major expansion,Shadow of the Erdtree, in less than a month. With the recently released story trailer offering an extended glimpse into the DLC, fans have gone into overdrive with the theories.
The trailer shows off more about the expansion’s main antagonist, Messmer the Impaler, but one portion of it hints at a macabre backstory that may have led to the birth of the Erdtree.
The Opening Scene Of The Trailer Is The Prime Suspect
The very beginning of the trailer shows a scene that could reveal the origins of the Erdtree – the towering, central element of the Lands Between. The opening shot shows a figure with long, blond hair potentially sacrificing themselves, among a disturbing environment. The identity of the figure in the scene is unknown, withsome believing it’s Godwyn. However, the theory assumes it’s Marika.

Eagle-eyed YouTuberZayf the Scholar noticeda disturbing detail: the walls surrounding Marika are constructed from a horrifying material – bloodied bodies. Hands, fingers, and even a spinal column are discernible, strengthening an older theory that proposed the Erdtree itself arose from a massive human sacrifice.
This could also explain the giant scar marring the Erdtree, a detail that has long piqued the curiosity ofElden Ringdiehards. The scar is linked to a pivotal event – “the birth of gold and shadow” – which apparently triggered a large-scale war. The trailer showing Messmer’s army, including the previously revealed Wicker Man enemies, laying waste to Leyndell with fire solidify this notion.

Another point of community speculation addressed by the trailer is the tree-like symbol adorning the helmets of the soldiers in this warring army. This symbol hints at a potentially familiar faction, though its exact significance remains unclear as of now.
Messmer’s Atrocities Were So Bad He Was Erased from Elden Ring’s History
Leadingthis terrifying army is Messmer, a character whose power and demigod roots have already been established. The trailer showcases his ability to command serpent-like flames, making players dread his inevitable boss battle even more.
A female silhouette engulfed in flames during the sequence also bears resemblance to the Black Knife assassins encountered in the base game. However, this figure wields a large spiral weapon, possibly a greatsword, hinting at a yet-unseen combat style.
The prominence of spirals throughout the trailer also suggests a connection to a pre-Erdtree “crucible culture,” potentially offering insights into the Lands Between’s forgotten past. Thetheories are still coming hard and fast, but all shall be revealed soon.
